I was really enjoying this vintage HP until the heroine started to ruin it a little with her dumbshit behaviour. Jassy, the English heroine, is just 19 yrs old but she's very immature, insecure and uncommunicative. She started off as a shy, sweet little Mary Sue ingenue whose life has been totally controlled by her manipulative, power hungry and gold digging stepfather Morgan. Jassy's just graduated from finishing school and her tycoon stepfather wants her to marry his business colleague's wastrel son, Rene. I loved the opening scene of the novel, because that's where she met the hunky H Max. Max is a 36 yr old American tycoon/investment banker/industrialist who's been smitten with insta-love from the moment he had first seen Jassy when she was just 17 ! I know: this is just about borderline legal but the guy was so in love and obsessed with her, that he bought an engagement ring and bided his time until she was older. He'd planned on waiting to meet her until she was older than 20 but his spies had informed him that her stepfather was forcing her to marry Rene. That's when he decided to enter the picture and sweep her away into his studly, scrumptious, older guy arms.
Max didn't let her know that he's been besotted with her for 2 yrs. He acts as if they've only just met. I thought he was far too nice, charming and chivalrous to be a vintage HPlandia hero. It's only during the final chapter when he explained about his 2 yr obsession with her, that I understood why he'd been so sweet to her when they first met in the romantic opening scene. The heroine is amazed at her good luck and can't believe that such a sexy guy is interested in her. Her stepfather isn't that happy though and he colludes with Rene to try and trap her into marriage with the young Frenchman. Jassy was the stereotypical useless damsel in distress. In fact, the title of the novel is most apt because she spent a lot of her time crying in her bedroom, crying on Max's shoulders or wringing her hands and worrying. The H spent 2 whole days courting her before she fell in love with him ! This part of the story was fabulous. The MC's seemed like star crossed lovers who were doomed to be separated by the evil Morgan and his henchman Rene.

The shit hit the fan when Morgan found out that Jassy's been dating Max in secret. Morgan tried to bully her into marrying Rene but she escaped before he could lock her in her bedroom ! The chivalrous protective H was right there to save her by proposing marriage. Everything would've worked out well if the stupid heroine hadn't listed to the manipulative lies that Rene had force fed her. I couldn't believe this girl was that idiotic. The H had treated her like a princess with tender loving care and lots of passionate make out sessions ( obviously ) and had his sister had welcomed her warmly into the family. These people were so kind and loving to this girl yet she chose to believe Rene's lies. What's worse was the fact that she didn't even confront the H with the information and ask him to tell her his side of the story. She thought he'd only married her in order to get his hands on the shares she owned in her stepfather's company. Jassy never stopped to question why a guy who's a tycoon/investment banker/industrialist would take such drastic steps to get a percentage of a company that's insignificant when compared to his entire investment portfolio. Trust was a huge problem with this heroine.
This dog shows a greater ability to trust, when compared to the heroine. Just look at how cool and comfortable he is doing his "trust fall" exercise:

Yeah, so Jassy developed a rather spiteful and bitter attitude to the poor H after they were married. She was such a mean and cold bitch to the guy ! I wanted to slap her bratty ass ! Max was awesome. I wish most H's in vintage Harlequinland could be this fantastic and kind. He only had eyes for the heroine and never gave her any reason to doubt him yet she failed to communicate with him. She stopped having sex with him and he still treated her with calm courtesy. This will sound so nasty of me, but at this point in the story I was secretly hoping that Max would turn into a Lilian Peake hero and start flirting with some OW just to make her jealous. And, Jassy would've continued to act like a dumbshitty bitch to the poor guy if a drunken Rene hadn't confessed the truth to her. Then, she was suddenly filled with remorse for the way she'd treated her husband.
They ended up sorting it all out after she confessed her stupidity to Max and the H was also gushing with pleasure at the news that he's gonna be a daddy in a few months' time. The best part of the story was Max's love confession to this moron:
'You must hate me.' Her voice shook and she was dangerously near to tears.
'Hate you?' His laugh was hard and humourless. 'I could never hate you, Jassy. I love you more than life itself. God, I'll always love you.'
She looked up into his harsh face, torn by the pain in his eyes. 'But how . . .? I don't understand,' she mumbled confusedly.
'What is there to understand? It's simple—I love you, Jassy, and I can't let you go. I thought I could, if ever you wanted to go—but I find I can't—I won't,' he said roughly, pulling her into his arms, ' his mouth hard and demanding against hers, kissing her deeply and hungrily until she was responding mindlessly, a slow languor warming her body, making her cling to him, her hands touching his hard-boned face. When he lifted his head and gazed down at her, she still clung to him, her eyes closed, her lips .still parted.
'Jassy, I need you. I know you're too young for me—it's been driving me crazy, but I loved you from the moment I first saw you.' He smiled, seeing her surprise. 'Yes, I fell hard, very hard. It was like being hit by a truck—I've never recovered,' he said wryly.
'On the beach?' she asked faintly.
'Two years before that,' he admitted, shocking her again.
This heroine will probably end up being cossetted and treated like a queen, for the rest of her life, by this smitten guy. If you're a fan of an obsessed, totally besotted H then you'll enjoy it. But you'll need to be a little tolerant of the heroine though.
Safety: No OW, a wannabe OM, no cheating. The sex scene fades to black.

The heroine was a leaky idiot. If it wasn't for her one moment of greatness, making mincemeat out of the OW and spitting her out into the mists of HPlandia, never to be heard from again, this would have been a very low rating. The hero was great, if you are into obsessive May-December romances.

Impulsive 19 year old heroine is a free spirit, caged by her stepfather and being forced to marry his friend and her amorous but unwanted suitor. She meets the hero, and falls head over heels- it's very obvious that the feelings are reciprocated. As pressure mounts to wed OM, she ends up marrying the hero- only to hear to some idiotic rumors started by the OM. This leads to her misbehaving with the hero post marriage, and pushing him away. He remains kind, caring and very obviously in love with her, while she realizes her stupidity, repents and finally gives into his long lasting obsession.
Loved the hero. Heroine was impulsive and gullible.

The heroine hadn't been loved since her mother died when she was twelve. So her only other outlook was her stepfather who put business first and used her abominably when he tried to marry her off for his business. When the heroine met the hero and fell in love with him, she told her stepfather that she refused to marry anyone but the hero, so her stepfather disowned her. Then on the day of her wedding, the man her stepfather wanted her to marry, showed up and changed her. Even though she still married the hero, she held a dark contempt to him from what her stepfathers chosen man had revealed.
It was a decent book that's for sure, it was very simplistic though, perhaps that what made everything about the book readable. I enjoyed it and was glad for the ending.

Wipe Away the Tears features 19-year-old Jassy (the name irritated the hell out of me, and it occurs 508 times in the book) falling in insta-lust with wealthy business magnate 36-year-old Max. Her controlling stepfather wants her to marry his business partner’s son René, but Jassy doesn’t want to. But she’s so damn weak she fears she’ll end up doing so anyway.
So she agrees instead to marry Max, a bloke she’s known for two days, and had a few gropes and snogs on the beach with. As you do.
Jassy is irritatingly beautiful. I don’t mind a beautiful heroine. I do mind a heroine who is endlessly described as beautiful and golden and flawless, endlessly whingeing to herself about her “too small breasts” and wishing she was “even more beautiful”. She’s also irritatingly stupid. “Do you enjoy being wealthy and powerful?” she asks Max.
Bear in mind this is a girl who has spent her entire silver-spoon life among rich and powerful people. It’s a bit like Chelsea Clinton asking Joe Biden if he “enjoys politics”.
The book was first published in 1982, and despite Max being madly in love with Jassy and kind and sensitive to the point of beta-ness, the sex is dominant and coercive in that typical 1970s-romance-novel way we all know (and pretend not to) love.
Smashing stuff. If only this book had a proper plot. Max’s eyes constantly glitter, by the way. I counted eight occurrences. But he’s pipped to the post by Jassy’s gold/golden hair, which gets fifteen mentions.
We do find out that Max has actually fancied Jassy since she was seventeen and he saw her photo in a newspaper. He even bought the ring back then, though they hadn’t ever met. There’s shallow and there’s shallow, and then there’s so atomically-thin that it’s probably covered in A Brief History of Time. It’s a good thing she gets up the duff from their first shag, because she’s only got her looks to hook him, and they’ll inevitably fade.
Do I recommend this book? Well, why not. You can read it for free at OpenLibrary.org.

5 stars for the hero Max. He is everything a woman would want and more. He is so in love with the woman and he doesn’t hide it. The sensual chemistry in this book between the man and the woman is amazing. Max is like a rock for the woman, he stands by her and fights for her against the whole world. I even found myself being jealous of the woman that she has the love of such a wonderful man, lol.

I checked out some of the reviews, and while I agree with a lot of what's said, I think in this case some excuses can be made for the h's behavior. True, she was quick to believe the worst of the H, but she was also young (only 19) and insecure, and unsure of herself. She had recently found out that her stepfather, who was a part of her life since she was a little girl and thought of as a father (and was her only family, since her mother was dead) didn't really care about her at all, except as a commodity, wanting to marry her off to the son of a business associate, as part of a deal. The son - whom she had liked as a friend - went along with the idea because anything involving a lot of money was okay by him, and he considered himself a catch. Jassy felt hurt and betrayed, so it was hard for her to trust at this point. And the H, Max was 36, almost 20 years older than Jassy, rich, powerful, handsome and sophisticated, so it wasn't surprising that she'd be wondering what he saw in her. He'd have plenty of women to choose from, so why would he want her? The insecurities were already there, so when Max proposed to her, she knew it was for more than just to get her away from her stepfather, Morgan and the planned marriage to Rene, but since he hadn't said he loved her, and they'd known each other only a matter of days, the stage was set for her to believe an ulterior motive (in this case, shares of stock she'd inherit, that she had known nothing about, which could give him control of Morgan's company). It was easy for her to believe this, despite it being Rene who told her.
After that, her emotions go a bit haywire, but again remember her age. She marries Max, planning to get revenge, then decides against that but won't sleep with him, then she gives in to desire, then regrets it and declares it won't happen again, acts snarky one moment, regretful the next, insists she doesn't want to be touched, then wears a pretty dress and flirts with him, keeps house and waits for him to come home, then acts indifferent when he's there, rejects jewelry he buys her than changes her mind, etc. It's a real rollercoaster, and I'm surprised Max didn't ask if she had a bipolar problem! (As it was, he assumed she was just young and inexperienced, and not entirely ready to be a wife, in bed or out. At times, he had the patience of a saint!) But all the time she just wanted to believe he loved her, but he never said the words, and she wasn't sure she could trust him if he did, thinking about the stock.
I couldn't help feeling sorry for her, a victim of her own insecurities and the lack of love since her mother died. If she had only confided in her sister-in-law, whom she had quickly gotten close with, she could have saved herself and Max a lot of misery.
I'm glad the author didn't go the usual runaway route (though Jassy did consider it), especially when Jassy discovers she's pregnant. At first, she wanted to leave because she didn't think he'd want the baby if he only married her for the stock shares, then after she found out the truth, she turned all her anger and bitterness on herself. She felt she wasn't worthy to be Max's wife, he deserved someone better, and didn't want him to feel obligated to her and the baby, when he could have children with a woman who deserved him, which she didn't.
Yes, she's a bit of a drama queen, but again, she's only 19. Plenty of h's in these novels are older and still act like teenagers, especially when they run off and hide the H's child from him for spite. In Jassy's case, she planned to leave and keep the baby secret because she thought Max would be happier without them. I can't help giving her some credit for that.

I couldn't even get through this book sorry. I read the first half of the book and skimmed to the ending because I wanted to get it over with. Why you ask? Because holy Jesus the heroine was SO irritatingly die hard for the hero. All I read was the heroine super duper fawning over the hero in her head, and the words the author used was just so barf inducing I'm like good God girl calm your you know what down! Also hero and heroine smoked so I wasn't into that either. And her conversations with him were just inane and he to her I have no idea why he was into her other than the physical. By the way she's 19 to his 36. I usually love let man younger woman stories but this one especially the heroine, she just bothered me. The adjectives to describe the hero and heroine are a little much too in the book. Ok I get it she is so fragile and vulnerable, yeah yeah he's so hard and masculine and indolent lol.

thouroughly disliked it! heroine was like a dumb doll. she needed others to feed her gossip to form an opinion. she behaved so immaturely, i dunno what max fell for apart from her appearance. she was really just a gauche teenager and he a cradle-snatcher lusting after a svelte and youthful blonde!thinking this to be love! yuck!
