From gold and oil fever and the West Edmonton Mall and the SCTV studio to profiles of W. P. Kinsella, Wayne Gretzky, and Emily Murphy, no book on Edmonton is more comprehensive and fun.
In more than three decades as a professional writer, Cheryl has explored subjects ranging from architecture to zoning, daycare to seniors, pioneers of the past to the next big thing. Based in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, she operates Words that Sing, a multi-faceted freelance writing and editing enterprise that (at its best) uses story to bring ideas alive. Recent projects have drawn Cheryl into multi-disciplinary teams to create books and other works that illuminate our heritage. Examples include a book celebrating the 100th anniversary of Field Law, video scripts tracing the human and geological history of Strathcona County and a display at the Alberta Legislature highlighting early women architects. Cheryl’s writing in architecture focuses mainly on sustainability and on the human side of the profession—particularly the role women have played over time. For a taste of that work, visit the website Women Building Alberta. She is also part of the team behind the children's book Bearly Over the Mountain. As that book exemplifies, Cheryl seeks ways to nudge us all toward more equitable, just and stewardly ways of living on the earth.
