Great Characters

Two years wasn't long enough. It's been that long since the last time Rae Gannon saw her former boss Jarrett McCullough, since she returned home after being freed from the captives who had tortured and nearly broken her only to realize that the man who had hired her and groomed her into one of his top covert couriers had blacklisted her. He couldn't risk the chance that either she or the information she carried was compromised, so she was out.

It was worse than the torture and captivity combined.

For the two years since, Rae has struggled to put her life back together. She retreated from the world, settled into a private home deep in the mountains, and worked through her issues with her art - something she'd picked up during the long months of therapy. It worked for her...most of the time.

Stumbling over the bloody body of a seriously wounded and unconscious McCullough not even a stone's throw from her mountain sanctuary was not one of those times.

Saving the life of a man she hated bred enough resentment to fuel her art for years to come, but Rae had no intention of letting him die in her home. Patch him up, get him out. That was the plan. Problem is, a conscious but vulnerable McCullough is a far more dangerous beast than she'd ever dreamed. She hates her body's traitorous response to the sheer approachable masculinity of the man almost as much as she hates what he asks her to do.

Two years wasn't nearly long enough.

Another solid re-release of a Kauffman classic from Loveswept! I love finding previously released authors who have slipped under my radar, and Kauffman impressed me on a lot of different levels with this one. The characters' backstory was truly excellent and I love how deftly Kauffman fit their complex and emotional history into the tapestry of their story.

I loved Rae and Jarrett. Rae was a hard core survivor, and her reaction to having Jarrett in her home, being forced to nurse him back to health out of common decency, was maybe my favorite part of the book. I love how she faced him, called him on the roll he took in their past, and challenged him at every turn. She was fairly awesome. And even when she started to soften, when she started to feel attraction for him, the conflict of her emotions added a layer of depth to the story I appreciated.

Jarrett was a bit harder to warm up to for me, in large part because of a scene in the very beginning of the book. I started to appreciate him more and more as the story progressed. He was unflinching in his acknowledgement of the sins and omissions of his past, but shaken by the effect it had on Rae. It sparks a metamorphosis in him that felt very organic to his character, as if he's slowly waking up to the human element that had bled from his life as a byproduct of his commitment to his cause.

The enemies-to-lovers storyline here was powerful, and though it happens over a short span of time, usually one of my bugaboos, the history between them muted that issue enough that I was able to enjoy their romance. The secondary storyline, a thread of suspense that wends its way through the book, provided the impetus behind the majority of the characters' actions, but it lacked the sort of detail and description necessary to really sustain itself consistently.

My only serious issue with the book was, unfortunately, the end. Up until the climax and subsequent resolution, I was enjoying the read quite a lot, but then the characters' romance thread intersected with the suspense thread and things went a little wonky for me. Suddenly it was like Rae and Jarrett were on a relationship fast-forward, and their HEA took on a sort of forced, cheesy, chick flick tone that didn't appeal to me at all. Or make much sense. I just couldn't figure out why the rush to the end point in the book, given everything.

Though this Kauffman re-release was shorter than I'd expected, ending at the 82% mark on my Kindle, and I had some problems with the end of the story, this was still a fun read with a more complex emotional landscape than I was expecting. Rae and Jarrett were great characters, and Kauffman, new-to-me before I started this book, detailed their evolving relationship with aplomb.

It has been a while since I have read a book by this author. What better way to get reacquainted than to pick up one of her older works? Surrender the Dark is the first in a series about three men who have been friends sine childhood. They call themselves The Three Musketeers of Madison County. This is Jarrett's book. He owns a business that deals in delivering sensitive information to dangerous places. Someone has sabotaged his latest mission and he ends up wounded and recovering in Rae's sanctuary on the mountain. Rae is a former employee who hates her ex-boss.

I enjoyed this one. It borders on romantic suspense, but is more about the romance than anything. I liked Rae and Jarrett. Watching them go from enemies to lovers was definitely engaging. Jarrett's transformation from stone-cold agent to relaxed happy guy was farily beleivable. The guy was really in need of a vacation. I think I would have liked a little more intrigue than was present, but it's a fairly short book so that probably wasn't a lot of room for it.

This was reissued a couple of years back by Loveswept, so pick up your copy today!

My Review:

I like emotional books and this is one of the best that I've read in a while.

Two years ago, Rae fled to the mountains, a broken woman. The man ultimately responsible for that was Jarrett, who'd been her boss when she'd gone in on a mission that went very wrong. Captured and tortured for months, when she came back, she was greeted with suspicion from Jarrett and JMI. The capture didn't break her, the suspicion did. She quit and escaped to her mountain hideaway where she stays alone. An orphan from the age of four, JMI had become her life and her family. The betrayal of that broke her heart.

Jarrett has an awful job constantly putting his operatives at risk. He's had to distance himself, knowing that what he does is better for the good of the most rather than the life of the one. It's cost him. He doesn't realize how much until he wakes up half-dead at Rae's mountain cabin. She found him in the woods, shot and dying and saved him. Now he needs her help, but first he has to recover some of his strength. As he slowly begins to realize what he's done to this woman, his heart and soul slowly begin to thaw. Like I said...E.MO.TION.AL.

This guy is totally an alpha...used to be the tough guy in charge, no questions, no weakness. When he first awakens at Rae's, he's almost dead and as weak as he can be. Suddenly he's vulnerable with the one person who could be his weakness...and ultimately becomes his strength to live a real life. It was just gorgeously written. Watching Jarrett's transformation was really incredible. He finds his heart and then has to shutter it again to send Rae into a dangerous situation. Beautiful writing with such evocative emotion. I truly love it.

Here's a great example of one of the heart-wrenching quotes and why I loved this book so much:

She was so damn strong.

And he'd never felt weaker. He wanted desperately to climb back into the safe, emotionless void he'd inhapbited for more years than he could remember. He craved the blessed relief of not allowing himself to feel, or want, or need.

She wasn't going to let him.

He looked at her and ached. Ached in places he didn't know had feelings.

This is the first in a trilogy about three friends. We get to see the friends briefly in this book, but not enough to tell exactly what there stories are going to be like. If they are half as good as this one, I will be happy!

Originally published in 1995, the new release includes a special message from the editor and some sneak previews of other Loveswept titles. As far as Surrender the Dark goes, it is the first in a series of 3 books centering around 3 close friends and special operatives. Surrender the Dark focuses on the romance between Rae Gannon and her ex-boss Jarrett McCullough.

*** Spoiler Warning ***

Jarrett McCullough own JMI a very specialized courier service. They deliver messages where no one else can or will. Every job they do is life and death for someone, often their own couriers. Seven years prior to the events of this story Rae Gannon, an orphan with no ties to blood or foster family, becomes one such courier. Her last mission for JMI goes terribly wrong and leaves her emotionally broken and turns her into a recluse in the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Fast forward to the present and Jarrett is on a mission for JMI and is compromised. Left bleeding in the woods not far from Rae's house, he refuses to darken her door step even to save his life. However, a young wolf he refuses to kill takes that decision out of his hands by leading Rae to him. Rae proceeds to nurse him back to health despite her negative feelings toward her former boss.

For the first quarter of the book we slowly find out more and more about the events that lead Rae into seclusion. Finally they kiss and the relationship truly starts to shift. Jarrett and Rae are both emotionally unavailable in their own ways. We watch as Jarrett and Rae helpto heal each other. We watch as they fall in love and find their classic happily ever after.

*** End Spoilers ***

The premise of this book was a classic enemies to lovers tail. The Hero and Heroine start out with many misconceptions about their past relationship leading them to be wary of each other. On Rae's part, it lead to down right loathing of her former boss. As for Jarrett, he feels responsible for the emotional toll that was inflicted on Rae while she was in his employee some 2 years previous.

I would give this book 3.5 stars. It was a little formulaic, but still an enjoyable read. It is a fast-paced romantic suspense and I would recommend it.

Thanks to the publisher, Random House Publishing Group, and NetGalley for the chance to read this!

This is the first book in the romantic suspense series, The Three Musketeers, by Donna Kauffman: Surrender the Dark is a re-issue of a Loveswept Classic Romance #760 originally published 10/95.

Intelligence courier Jarrett is injured and on the run from trouble. Unconsciously, he heads straight toward Rae’s, an ex-courier, house. This hot fast paced novel will keep you on your toes as they find forgiveness and love. I am a huge fan of romantic suspense so when I came across these books by Ms. Kauffman; I knew I had to read them. I enjoyed this book -- the dialogue was witty, the characters are well rounded, and the story pace kept me intrigued. If you are a fan of romantic suspense, I highly recommend this series. This is a well-balanced story with equal parts romance and suspense. .

Other Installments:
#2 (Zach Brogan’s story) – Born to Be Wild
#3 (Dane Colbourne’s story) – Midnight Heat

I really liked Rae and I really liked Jarrett. Both of them have issues separately and together and they both view it differently. But what makes their dynamic really great is that Jarrett doesn't discredit her feelings. For those of you who don't read a ton? That's not super common. Usually you have the guy who's kind of an arrogant asshole, very take charge, and doesn't take into consideration that other people have feelings.

Basically though, this is about Rae who used to work for Jarrett, but she's fairly traumatized from that work. Jarrett is still in the business so to speak and ends up on Rae's door (well, kind of) because of it and he is in near-death shape. Having a soft heart she takes him in with the intentions of kicking his ass to the road as soon as he can walk there. But then nothing happens as it seems and they fall for each other and she agrees to help even though it's traumatic for her.

The only thing I could say is that if Donna wants to add more danger? Go for it. It kind of reminds me of a Linda Howard book (and I'm a huge Linda Howard fan). *spoiler* I expected the bad guys to come crashing into the house, violence, etc. And despite all of that, I still really liked this book. Rae and Jarrett and really great and I love their dynamic, their relationship, and how the relationship developed leading to her going on a mission.

It is a really fast read and I got it done in just a few hours and I really, really liked it. I'm already working on getting the others in this series because if they are written half as well as this one? I'll be in heaven.

Surrender the Dark was so much more than I expected. I expected it to be fun and a little intense. It was a lot intense and a little fun. Jarrett, the hero has closed himself off from feeling any emotions and from experiencing regular life. He lives for his job and his company. He doesn’t have a life at all other than that. He has 2 best friends that get together about once a year and that’s it.
Rae, a former courier for Jarrett’s company has dealt with a lot as well. Her mother died when she was four. She had no idea who her father was, so she bounced through the foster system. Once in college she meets with Jarrett in her counselor’s office and knows that this is the job for her. She will be serving her country by delivering classified documents into war torn countries. When she is captured and held captive, Jarrett fears the worse, that she was compromised and left her there thinking she was a traitor. When she escapes and comes to headquarters, she feels betrayed. Everyone thought she sold out, when she was the one set up.

Rae escapes and heals in her mountain home. She doesn’t do relationships (friends or otherwise). I love how these two were constantly at battle with their inner selves. They wanted each other but didn’t want to want any one. This is a very moving story. I will be reading the next book in the series to see if the author can keep this level of writing up. It was truly an amazingly written and thought out book. I truly loved it.

I really enjoyed Surrender the Dark. So much more than I was expecting. To be honest I was taken by surprise by Surrender the Dark. It's not that I expected it not to be a good book, I just thought it would be rather stereotypical with maybe a a little bit of cheese. But it wasn't at all. I think because the characters were so fleshed out by having a previous working relationship that hadn't ended well you and the level of Ms Kauffman's writing gives the reader something they can really fall into which isn't usual considering the storyline which can give the reader certain expectations.
Rae went through a horrible ordeal and was hurt and betrayed by Jarrett and when she finds him on her doorstep she does that right thing even though it hurts her. Ms Kauffman doesn't let Rae shy away from her emotions just because Jarrett needs her help. Nope Rae embraces everything and lets it all fly. Yes, she's totally annoyed, scared, hurt and confused but just because Jarrett is an alpha character Ms Kauffman doesn't let Rae back down to him and make him happy just to get him to leave and appease his alpha-ness. Rae stays true to who she is even after all she' suffered and while Jarrett regrets what Rae went through he eventually comes round to proving he's a better character than Rae thought.

Overall Surrender the Dark is a well paced, deep romantic suspense that I can come back and enjoy again and again.

This book tell the story of Jarrett who is injured ended up at Rae's doorstep. Rae who is enjoying her life in isolation found it disturbing when she found her ex boss barely conscious. Hence, she took him in and take care of her. Being betrayed by an insider who know the secretive operation that Jarrett is taking charge of, he have to rope Rae's help but Rae have her own demon to overcome. This book is the first of the three books under the Three Musketteers. Overall, the book is an enjoyable read and contained the typical ideas of a romance book.

This is a reprint of an earlier work from Donna Kauffman. As with all her books I enjoyed this one. The characters are interesting. The women in Kauffman’s Loveswept novels always prove to be independent and capable, yet, willing to find love. The men are dangerous and a diamond in the rough. This book was no different. This is the first in the Three Musketeers series. It is a good short read. Perfect for cuddling up in front of the fire or on a beach.
