Sooo first read of the new year! Sadly this is not for me but it could be for someone else! The stars I think are for the idea of the plot alone.. I’m normally a very positive reviewer with stars I will say! The plot and story as a whole is very underdeveloped for me. There is sadly not much I can say about it. This story has very short sentences throughout, very childlike ( I never wish to offend!) and it did bore me even though I finished it in about an hour ( I don’t know how I finished it in all honesty 😅).
1.5 stars This book needs A LOT of work. It felt like a first draft/brain dump. There are concepts of a story in there and it's definitely a premise that could be enjoyable. The author clearly had a story she wanted to tell and a lot of creative ideas
HOWEVER... there are glaring issues in the execution. Typos (more than one or two, even names were spelled inconsistently), The POV shifting in the middle of sentences, repetitive, stilted dialogue...plot points that are contradictory or just don't make sense. There were even sentences that cut in between chapters! It was a hot mess. The timeline also isn't very clear.
I did ultimately laugh a lot while reading it, but I don't think that was the author's intent. It just kindof rolled into a "so bad it's enjoyable" territory. At one point I was describing what happened and my spouse asked if I had been drinking 😆
I think if the author took some time to revisit this - go through a round of editing or two, they would have something.
I will close this review the same way the book did:
I want to start off by saying that I can just imagine how difficult it would be to not only write a novel but include all the necessary steps involved in publishing and marketing. With that being said, I hate giving bad reviews and try my best to find something positive about each book I read and each review I write. Unfortunately, I was unable to find any redeeming qualities in the novel, "Lola Rising". The plot and characters had no depth. All of the sentences were short, lacked detail, and didn't connect with some of the few previous details that were given. The dialogue did not flow easily between the characters. My first thought was that based on the sentence structure, this might be more of a YA read (if the erotic details/dialogue) were removed. I do wish Ms. Whisler luck with her future writing endeavors. Unfortunately, I don't think this novel will be one of her better attempts.
DNF. I received this book for free on Goodreads Giveaways. I believe that the author used up all of her creative abilities in the “About Author” section. This book has no,plot, no character development, and no adherence to basic grammar and writing principles. The writing style is confusing, switches between which person is speaking in first person and third person, and seems to repeat itself every few pages. I thought Fifty Shade of Grey was poorly written but seems like a masterpiece in comparison. Furthermore, the book summary on the back has nothing to do with anything I read to the point of quitting. The dialogue is choppy, inconsistent and amateurish. Do not recommend and would not pay to read!
It was hard to get through and tiresome to follow whose POV it was. I received this book as a Goodreads giveaway so I stuck with it so I could leave a review.
There were tons of grammatical/spelling errors (like every other sentence), plot issues, segue issues, random POV switches, repetition, contradictions, flow/progression issues, immature/robotic writing style, and more. It appears that the book was never proofread or edited before release. The overall plot had some potential but it fell flat and was poorly executed. There was no build up and things just happened matter of factly with no reasoning or explanations.
Even the fact that I got this book for free on Stuff Your Kindle Day could not make me enjoy reading any further than the first few typo-ridden pages. I’d say it was like reading a child’s fanfic, except that I know for a fact that my real-life seven-year-old can write better than this. This book should not have seen the light of day.
