Susan's book has lifted me up after a physically and emotionally exhausting week. I picked it up and couldn't put it down. It felt like Susan was sitting right next to me, reminding me of all the things that truly matter in life. In every area that I've been neglecting or having a hard time with, she was right there with helpful stories and gentle reminders about how to turn things around.
This book is straightforward, relatable, fun to read, engaging, practical, inspiring and above all - helpful!
From the last chapter: "Under all the stress, fear, failures, and wrong choices you might have made in your life, you know who you really are, and how you're meant to live. I hope I've successfully reminded you of how totally original you are, how worthy of love you are, how brilliant and wonderful your body is, and what you you need to thrive."
Susan achieves her mission with flying colors in this book. She is vulnerable, relatable and wise, and I recommend it highly to anyone looking to re-connect with what is most important in life.
This was one from my mom's reading list, and while it felt dated particularly with its tone of "I'm the worst at X but look at me now, you can too!", there are still some interesting tidbits to be gleaned. A sampling:
- "Whenever you get a clear impulse to do or try something different, especially when the idea seems to 'come out of nowhere,' it's usually something that will turn out to be immensely important to your life path. That is, if you're able to find the courage and faith to do it." - "I don't know why so many people in this world seem to feel that it's their responsibility to tell you why you shouldn't try something, and why you're going to fail if you do." - "Who were you as a little child? What did you love to do? That marvelous little powerhouse of energy and creativity that you used to be may well hold the keys to your most fulfilling version of you today." - "They say that your income tends to be the average of the incomes of the five people that you spend the most time with. I'd expect that the same rule would hold true for all kinds of personal qualities: kindness, generosity, spirituality, success, and so on." - "Awareness is the antidote to addiction. Once you stop and ask yourself what it's really about, once you see your behavior for what it is and admit the full effect that it's having on your life, it'll never derail you in the same way again." - "One of the most common ways that people block their lives, and block themselves from attending to their true needs, is through clutter. As long as it's there, bogging you down, you don't have to deal with the discomfort of moving forward into unfamiliar territory." - "When someone gives you something, they benefit - emotionally, spiritually, and physically. And guess what? No one can experience the benefits of giving unless there's someone who's willing to receive what they want to give." - "Keep your values and dreams in mind every time you decide whether or not to take on a new commitment. Put a priority on the activities that boost your health and happiness." - "I've decided that perfection is simply whatever is best for my life and development right now - no matter how unappealing it may seem to me in the moment. It's all good, and it's all for my good. I've found that having this attitude when tough times arrive makes such a difference to the entire experience." - "What are you putting off, right now, for 'someday'? Do you have a dream, but the financial timing isn't quite right? Get started anyway. Take whatever first small step you can."
I generally love self help books, esp those that impart a sense of optimism. Susan Biali's book is one of my favorites. Trained as a doctor, she had the bravery and moral courage to walk away from the profession when she realized she did not love it. Instead she became a flamenco dancer. Now she is also a life coach in the best sense of the concept. Her optimism and candor are encouraging and entertaining. Highly recommend.
I enjoyed this book. The flow is very typical, with the author sharing stories about how she changed her life around with the techniques in the book. But what I really liked was the seven steps - they are practical and easy to implement. She also provides good challenges and questions for helping you to go deeper in order to implement changes in your own life.
Pienso que los consejos dados por la Dra. son geniales y llenos de experiencias reales. Me hizo reflexionar acerca de las cosas realmente importantes en la vida..
