In this groundbreaking devotional book, Peter Scazzero introduces the ancient spiritual discipline of the Daily Office. The basic premise is We need to stop intentionally to be with God more than once a day so that the practice of the presence of God becomes a real possibility. Each day offers two Daily Offices-Morning/Midday and Midday/Evening.
This book is meant to accompany the Emotionally Healthy Spirituality book, but can easily be used alone. It concentrates on spending twice a day in some quiet meditation with God. The scriptures used are great and the accompanying narrative thought provoking. Though once through the book was great, I look forward to going through it again. It is packed with lots of spiritual encouragement as well as areas to explore to become more emotionally healthy.
Second time through and just like the first time I was challenged again and again. The brevity is only in the volume of work that was written; the longevity will be the musing over, digesting and practicing the timeless truths presented. by far the BEST devotional I have ever read - EVER!
This book is an excellent and essential companion to Scazzero's book, Emotionally Healthy Spirituality: Unleash the Power of Authentic Life in Christ. It is best used while reading through that book. Each chapter gives you 5 days of morning and evening guides to prayer that follow the material in the larger book. Those who have tried to form a habit of having a single, daily "quiet time devotional" and have become discouraged, ought to try this approach. Scazzero shows how it can be much more helpful to have more short periods of prayer throughout the day than to have one longer one. Periodic prayer during the day does much more to help one maintain an awareness of God's presence in our lives. Together these books offer some very helpful and accessible material on growing emotionally and spiritually healthy without being trite or shallow. I highly recommend these books.
This is easily the best resource on personal spiritual formation I have read. Scazzero's deals with personal spirituality at a level that goes much deeper (into my past) and much higher (into the future) so I can better understand where I am at now spiritually. I used the workbook while reading this and found that to be helpful but would like to see another resource for more personal reflection (especially in the first four or five chapters). I finished the book a month ago and am working through the Daily Office as well as following a Rule of Life. All of this together has helped me tremendously to live more peacefully with God, myself, and others. The impact of this book on my own spirituality will continue to grow.
Very interesting read, very good devotional stories and thought-provoking comments.
"...because those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship. And by him we cry, "Abba, Father." The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God's children. Now if we are children, then we are heirs — heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory." Romans 8:14-17, NIV
