Marry in red, you're better off dead.

Was that how she was going to feel, married to Dominic? Angela had adored Dominic five years before. But she had obviously been wrong in succumbing to his kisses after only a few weeks because he'd then accused her of sleeping around.

Now they had met again and he was behaving very strangely. Whenever she went near Mike, her best friend's husband and Dominic's half brother, there was Dominic jealously appearing to lay claim to her. What was going on?

Second chance, secret baby story that hinges on a huge misunderstanding that continues until the very end of the story. There are lots of hints that the hero got it wrong, wrong, wrong - but we don't find out what the hero actually heard until the last quarter of the book.

The story opens with the hero replaying in his mind how the heroine betrayed him with his half-brother the night before his half brother's wedding. It had only been a few days before when he (at 30) had taken the 18 year-old heroine's virginity. But apparently she loved sex so much she had to jump in bed with her best friend's fiance.

Now, five years later, the heroine is going to be godmother to his half-brother's infant. The hero is enraged by this and wants to keep the heroine away from his half-brother. Heroine's bff promised that the hero would not be in attendance at the christening. So heroine left her secret 4 year-old son with her father and returned to the manor house where she had loved and lost.

Hero is cruel to the heroine and she doesn't know why because he broke up with her. Hero eventually finds she has a son when she is called home because her father is ill. Hero thinks the child is his half-brother's.

Then there is the hero's father's will that he changed right before he died. Whomever has a son first will inherit the manor house. Heroine lets everyone know the hero has four year old son, hero doesn't dispute it and announces their engagement.

They do marry, have sex on their wedding night - and then it is deja vu all over again as the hero cruelly rejects her. Hero eventually spells out how he knew she cheated on him and that he thinks her son is his half brother's. Heroine gives him a great smack down* as she denies everything and wakes up to the fact that the hero's stepmother

I was hoping the heroine would make him squirm longer - but he did chase after them and he did a bit of a grovel before she cut him off. GRRRR - when heroes want to grovel let them speak!

*smackdown

That's only part of the smackdown - it went on for two pages. *happy sigh*

This easily could’ve been a touching/heart-warming narrative, if, the author actually allowed the child to be a part of the story. The boy was only plot-prop, with one purpose of moving the plot forward but without further importance. There was never a relationship, any tender emotion nor a decent reaction concerning the child from the hero. It was so weird. He was disinterested in the whole thing. Sure, he thought the child was his brother but later when he did find out, it wasn’t the reaction it should be either. Hero has no fatherly instinct whatsoever. Furthermore, heroine was just a disinterested in the matter too. You would think the heroine would react accordingly to father’s & son’s reunion. Yet nothing, besides a fleetingly thought or two. Just too bad...

Grace Green is a new author to me though this book has been around for a long time. This is a classic reunion story between a couple who'd been young lovers until someone threw a very nasty spanner in the works. Dominic believed Angela had betrayed both himself and her best friend by sleeping with his stepbrother Mike on the eve of his wedding to Patsy.
When they meet again at the Christening of Mike and Patsy's child all Dominic can think of is protecting the happily married couple until Angela leaves.
The revelation half way through the weekend that Angela has a child puts all his calculations out and to salvage the situation there is only one thing he can do. Marry Angela and claim her child as his own.
With this much baggage it's hard to know where they can go but the story is well told and the characters very likeable. It's takes a few revelations from the past to straighten everything out and the results is an enjoyable read with a nice touch of angst.
