This is an excellent book for learning the Cyrillic script! There are 33 characters in the Russian alphabet in total. They make it fun with the exercises, and new characters are introduced bit by bit with each new chapter. There are plenty of examples for reading practice.

It's definitely way more exciting learning it this way, than say to learn it on your own without a guide or something. After roughly 3 hrs of going through this book, I'm already familiar with all the characters. Definitely one of the easiest writing systems to learn!

They also teach you the handwritten script, which is slightly different to the printed/computer script.

Soon, I'll be moving onto learning the spoken Russian language. Already knowing Cyrillic beforehand would definitely a huge advantage.

I got this for only 9 dollars AUD off ebay. What a nice bargain. :D

UPDATE 08/10/14:

I finished the printed script section way back in May/June. I just noticed that this book is still on my currently reading list. Since I don't think I'll ever use this book again, because I'm not interested in reading the handwritten script chapters, I might as well tick it off as complete.

Who knows. Maybe one day, I will revisit this manual, and learn the handwritten script in depth. But at this point, it's just not necessary for me.

I had already begun dabbling in spoken Russian since July, and it's been a massive help for me - already being able to read the Russian alphabet. My reading skills were still poor when I first completed these few chapters. But after starting Russian, I've been doing so much practice with reading and writing. Everything has pretty much sunk in and I can read the characters with much more ease. Practice makes perfect. The mission was a success!

An excellent introduction to reading Cyrillic. Uses mostly cognates, especially at first, to make it easier to connect sounds to words--you can learn the sounds of the letters without having to remember vocabulary, since you already know the words. Also has a section on Russian cursive, which is a bit harder to find than Cyrillic print.

Fairly brief and effective introduction to a reasonably simple topic. The Russian alphabet is not too hard to learn, and this book lets you learn and practice using familiar words with familiar meanings. While you could really learn the writing system from the pronunciation key in most Russian language textbooks, this book introduces the symbols in a gradual way and incorporates some practice into the learning. A good introduction for the absolute beginner.
