Peaceful Reading

For those times I need a bit if ease and comfort, I can pick up this book and settle in as with a good friend who smiles when she sees me at her door. She also reminds me of my sister, "St. Mary," as I call her, and that is an added bonus.
I was first introduced to Ms. Clark when I read "The Place He Made," which is such a melancholy book that, at times, I have to put it away for a bit until I am at a point, emotionally, where I can read more. But it is *well* worth reading.

I always enjoy Edie Clark articles in Yankee Magazine, the folksy writing and wonderful descriptions of New Hampshire, this book was a wonderful addition to those stories and memories.

I feel like the thoughts she writes down came right out of my head. I can picture myself standing in garden fields experiencing what she describes in these pages. She talks about her old farm house and the many generations that have enjoyed it's splendor as much as she. She writes about her quintesential New England seasonal shifts that brings with it delights that will make any reader appreciate her observations. She talks of snuggling up in her bed during the cold winters and spying the winter garden of ice crystals on her single paned windows. She compairs the coming of winter as a "familiar and comfortable bed after a long hard day" of a busy summer. Her woodstove beckons to me the warmth welcome and her summertime hill calls my name. I wish I could visit her country home in, but through these pages, I feel like I have.

This was a gift from Gertrude. Edie Clarke is a writer for Yankee magazine and this is a compliation of her columns related to renovating an old house in NH. I enjoyed it very much but the house is SO much work and i was constantly reminded, with her descriptions of snow, why I don't live in the north any more.

In a series of wonderful short essays she relates the trials, tribulations, and joys that accompany her the first few years on the farm. She writes in an easy conversational style, very enjoyable.
