I had to read this for my introductory course into ancient history and really did not expect that I'd enjoy it as much as I did. It's a readily comprehensible, well structured and easily understandable overview over the era of Roman emperors (Augustus to Constantin). When I got the book in my mail I was a bit shocked and almost dreaded reading it, because of how thick it is (around 800 full pages). But the writing is accessible, understandable and simply great. At times it's compelling and thrilling, really fun to read and of course (and maybe most important) informative and factual. Karl Christ was obviously really passionate about this topic (he was a professor after all) and you do notice that while reading. He pays attention to detail, conveys all the neccessary information to understand the (at times) complex events and politics, and writes it so that even a complete layperson/hobby historian will have a good time while learning at the same time. I highly recommend it to everybody who's even slightly interested in this field of study. It's a great overview and reference book to keep in your bookshelf. I guess it's also great for history fans who want to improve their German, the employed register is both sophisticated and accessible. And I would also recommend it to someone who may not be the biggest fan of Roman history. All the intrigues, complex politics, machinations - it does mimic Tolkien or G.R.R. Martin at times (or actually the other way around) and thanks to Christ's writing it is really compelling and exciting to read through. Great book, completely unexpected, and a lot of fun.
Very comprehensive overview of the history during the roman emperors - from Augustus to Konstantin. I think it's the most comprehensive overview over this time in German language.
