Reinhart Koselleck was a German historian, considered as one of the most important historians of the twentieth century. He held an original position in the historical discipline and was not part of any historical 'school', working in such varied fields as Conceptual history (Begriffsgeschichte), the epistemology of history, linguistics, the foundations of an anthropology of history and social history, the history of law and the history of government.

Conceptual history moves between the study of past ideas and society. Reinhart Koselleck was a major figure of this approach and this book represents a useful introduction in his work. It is good for the reader interested in a nuanced study of these hotly debated issues. The review is about the Romanian version.

Concepts and their histories is an anthology of theoretical and methodological essays. My favorites are about ideas and social history, how the meaning of terms varied in the past and the malleability in time of the notions that researchers use. The underlying perspective, suggested by Reinhart Koselleck, is that the relationship between thinking and acting is not a simple one and that context matters. Two other theses are debated.

One is that concepts are necessary conditions for social behavior. Reinhart Koselleck argued that without ideology, politics and collective movements are impossible. In Concepts and their histories, ideas are not simply derivatives of interests or of social structures, even when they are influenced by them. They configure events and they may clash with their direction.

The other thesis is that the ideas that researchers use to understand history are also mutable. The scholars take ideas from the reality they try to understand and they sometimes influence it. But not everything changes inConcepts and their histories. For Reinhart Koselleck, the preeminent historian here is Thucydides, the one who contrasted speeches with action.

Concepts and their histories are full of examples and comparisons. The reader that expects a definitive answer may be disappointed by Reinhart Koselleck's essays. The author used to complicate the issues and to show the many dimensions involved in the relationships between ideas, society and the past. As it was the case of Raymond Williams' writings, I took that lesson that changes in words may mean changes in life.

Eine Sammlung von Aufsätzen und Reden Kosellecks, gegliedert in einen methodischen Teil und vier Teile, die sich mit je verschiedenen Begriffsgruppen beschäftigen. Wie in vielen Aufsatzsammlungen ergeben sich einige Überlappungen und Redundanzen.
Nachdem ich einiges über Kosellecks methodischen Ansatz zur Begriffsgeschichte gelesen hatte, war ich auf die Anwendung gespannt. Kosellecks Fähigkeit, historische "Bedeutungsstreifen" in Begriffen aufzuspüren, ist beeindruckend. Allerdings löst er den Anspruch, das Wirken von Begriffen - gewissermaßen als "Agenten" - in der Geschichte aufzuzeigen, nur selten ein. In dieser Hinsicht bieten Pockock und insbesondere Skinner mehr und m.E. besseres.
