I loved that it was the girl who was good at football and the boy who was great at cheerleading!

I have been reading books by Nancy Carlson and now I have stumbled upon one of her books called “Making the Team” and in this story, Arnie the Cat and Louanne the Pig both try out for the cheerleading and the football teams. “Making the Team” is a truly wonderful book for children who want to learn about the importance of teamwork!

When Louanne and Arnie found out that cheerleading and football tryouts were coming up, they both decided to try out for the teams. Arnie tried to practice for football tryouts, but kept on messing up until Louanne helped him with practice. Louanne tried to practice for the cheerleading squad but she kept on messing on until Arnie helped her with practice. When the day finally arrived, Arnie and Louanne were both in high spirits.

Oh my goodness! Now this is one book that shows the power of friendship! Nancy Carlson has once again done a fantastic job at both writing and illustrating this cute book about the power of teamwork and friendship! What really surprised me about this book was the fact that Arnie is shown as the good guy in this book as he constantly helps Louanne Pig in her tryouts for the cheerleading squad since in many books I have read about Arnie, he is shown to be a bully. So, it was lovely seeing Arnie show his support towards Louanne throughout this book. Louanne Pig as always is shown to be sweet and kind hearted and I loved the way that she also helps Arnie out with his football practice as it clearly shows what true friends Arnie and Louanne are to each other. Nancy Carlson’s illustrations are extremely cute and creative as all the characters are drawn as animals with human features such as standing on two legs instead of on all fours. I especially loved the images of Louanne Pig and Arnie as Arnie wears dark glasses and has gray fur while Louanne Pig is seen wearing a pink sweater throughout the book. It was also cute seeing Louanne and Arnie practice together for the tryouts and I enjoyed seeing Arnie jump around when he was showing Louanne some cheerleader moves and how Louanne was doing some tackling moves for Arnie.

Overall, “Making the Team” is a truly inspiring book about the importance of true friendship and teamwork that every child will love for many years! I would recommend this book to children ages three and up since this book is appropriate for younger children.

Although this is the story about a cat and a pig, this is another book that also shares gender roles and acceptance. Louanne the Pig wants to try out for the cheerleading squad and Arnie the Cat wants to go for the football team. As the two of them have been practicing, Louanne can't seem to get her jump right, but Arnie can. Arnie also had a hard time catching a football, but Louanne was able to. When tryouts came, Louanne didn't make the squad but wanted to help Arnie with some last minute pointers for his audition. The football coach saw Louanne and offered her a tryout on the team. While she made the team, Arnie didn't, but he tried out for the cheerleading squad and makes it.

While reading his book I came across a lot of social issues that I think can apply in today's day. Does a girl really have to be a cheerleader if she's interested in football? Vice-versa? Is it accepted? Just because you aren't good at something doesn't mean you aren't good enough. I think that is what this book's deep rooting is, to encourage kids that even though you may not be good at something, you have other talents that could be shared. If you want to do something that may not fit the typical stereotype you should pursue it. While this may seem heavy, Nancy Carlson was creative in giving children hope and some inspiration.

The illustration of the characters being animals I thought was fun also. This is goes along with Nancy Carlson's classic Louanne the Pig series. She did make a clear depiction of Lounne clearly being a girl as well as Arnie being a boy.

I gave this a 5 star rating because I think deep down this book shares valuable lessons while making it fun with a happy ending.
