Kids' books are not normally my thing, but since I've read Matt Haines' BIG BOOK OF KING CAKE, I thought I'd give this a try. It's a cute overview of king cakes, although being a book for children, the author does gloss over just how contentious an issue 'the best king cake' can be in our city. Sadly, I kept picturing the magical king cake baby that takes Miley on her dream adventure as the New Orleans Pelicans' mascot*, which made the story kind of creepy.

* Arguably the worst mascot in professional sports. If you're not familiar with it, here's a link. https://www.rocketcitynow.com/article...

This book stole my Louisiana heart. A beautiful story that covers the past. Present, and future of Louisiana culture as well as traditions in general. I was swept away by the sage advice of the grandmother and the heartwarming passing down of that tradition from father to daughter. It was a dilemma and A Christmas Carol learning experience all wrapped in one with beautiful art and eye-catching detail right down to her socks. I love that they made this a walk through New Orleans including the actual makers of these beautiful, traditional pastries. This is Louisiana my friends. Grab this for yourself and for future generations as well as if you are not from Louisiana still get this book for your children for them to have a little taste of what we call home ⚜️
