Kids will learn interesting facts about polar animals while being able to use interactive features on the pages like flaps, pull-tabs, dials, and more. Polar Animals is part of the Ultimate Spotlight series that also features books on astronauts, dinosaurs, firefighters, rain forest animals, savanna animals, and trains.
Starting in Antarctica, two types of penguins are featured, the Adélie and the emperor. Their winter runs from March to October. Kids will learn all about these penguins on the first two pages including that penguins are actually birds, birds that don’t fly but use their wings for swimming. Kids will lift the flap to see how the penguins protect themselves from the winds and extreme cold.
Humpback whales cover more than 15,500 miles in a year. They are mammals that grow babies in their bellies. The babies are born in warm waters and then moved to colder waters to feed. Humpback whales don’t have teeth. Kids will pull the tab to see the whale open its mouth to reveal its baleen plates.
The middle of the book features fold-out pages of winter and summer in the Tundra, the dry land close to the North Pole, and areas by the South Pole. The same animals are featured on each page spread and share how they adapt and survive during the winter and summer seasons.
The facts on the pages aren’t overwhelming and the illustrations are accurate and detailed. The interactive features on each page offer kids the chance to learn even more about the animals and engage with the reading. I believe this book is best geared for lower elementary but younger preschool readers will also enjoy the interactive features and the illustrations of the animals.

Polar animals live at both the north and south poles. We learn about penguins (Emperor and Adélie), orcas, seals, whales, the Tundra and of course, polar bears. We learn what they look like, their diet, their young, and how they've adapted to the environment.
The flaps and tabs and wheels are so kid friendly, easy to figure out and satisfying. Oh, the whale's blowhole that also opens its mouth - I played with it myself because it was so amazing. A great addition to an elementary library.
