Heroine proposes marriage to the hero as her "desperate remedy" so she can keep custody of her orphaned niece.
The H/h have a history.
Heroine's brother-in-law worked for hero. Heroine's twin sister wrote in her diary that she had been in the hero's bed (?!) before announcing her pregnancy. From that entry, heroine thinks the hero had an affair with her twin and that her niece might be the hero's daughter. Therefore he's the best candidate for a marriage of convenience.
Hero thinks the heroine is a nympho like his ex-wife because she was changing out of a dress in his bedroom at the niece's baptism. He thought she was laying a honeytrap for him, but heroine was too mortified to say anything.
As you can see, these two have earned gold medals in leaping to conclusions and they will continue that trend throughout their marriage.
The entertainment value -for me - came from seeing how crazy the hero was about the heroine. He tried to be cruel and aloof but he could never keep it going. Heroine would get her feelings hurt and never see just how caring he was being.
They finally worked it out when the author ran out of pages and a simple conversation solved all of their problems. If that sort of misunderstanding bothers you, you'll hate this one. If you like characters twisting in the wind because of their own short-sightedness, you'll love it.
For the record. Hero never had any sort of affair with the twin. She fainted because of her pregnancy and was placed on his bed to recover.
It was okay but to0 much jumping to conclusions on both their parts. And while you go through most of the story knowing the h thought the H had been in love with the "OW" (her sister), you get a surprise when it turns out the H thought the h had been in love with the "OM" (her brother-in-law); I didn't expect that one!
In truth, both were incredibly silly, he jumping to his conclusion by a misunderstood situation, and she jumping to hers by a misread diary.
But I wish the story had been more about their marriage and that the baby (the h's niece, whom she mistakenly thought was the H's bio daughter) had lives with them and they had been becoming a family, rather than just a lot of time wasted with the two of them misunderstanding each other, arguing out of frustration, and afraid to admit their true feelings. It got redundant.
BTW: there's NO WAY that, at age 22, the h could be e member of the Guild of Glass Engravers! You need 3-5 years of learning the basics, then about 5-10 years to reach master level. You also need to be working (as well as networking) constantly and building up a portfolio, and a young woman who first cares for an ailing mother, then her baby niece, while working part time at home (glass designing at home???, OH, COME ON!!!) would not be anywhere near Guild member level! She'd have to be at least 30 before she managed that!
I do wish these authors didn't enjoy insulting their readers' intelligence!
4 Stars for a convincing and engaging love story. 1 Star for the gee-I'm-paid-by-the-word writing style. 3 Stars for hero hitting my grr button every time he accused her of sleeping around or being a party girl. He had very little to base this on, mostly a hangover from his first wife's nasty habits.
Did anyone edit this thing? I couldn't believe some of the sentences, they read the way someone would ham up a fake opera.
On the other hand the story itself was great if you can stop wincing at the extra words she throws in.
Penny's proposal of a temporary marriage of convenience shocked British business tycoon Saul van Diemen. Well, Penny conceded, he'd only met her once and had hardly approved of her then.
But now Penny needed Saul to gain legal custody of her recently orphaned niece. As the child's godfather, Saul just had to say yes.
Although if he did agree, Penny knew that this outwardly perfectly desirable, dynamic male --- embittered by his first wife's betrayal --- would be no "perfect" stranger to live with
nice one..though i did not get dat part where saul said he had raped penny. was it rape !? i do not understand y he said dat. as 4 penny, what an imaginative little mind she had !! she read a few lines in her sister's diary n came wid such outrageous conclusions LOL ! clearly she is excessively good at reading between the lines haha xd
