This was headed for 5 stars until I got to the ending. Or something approximating an ending. Or whatever you call it when a book just stops, as if the author ran out of ink, or the acid finally kicked in, and he couldn't find any more words.

I mean, the story just stopped, and pages from a different book seemed to be inserted into my copy. I was getting into what seemed to be the place where one would expect a climax, followed by a brief denouement.

The chapter ended (on a bit of a climax), I turned the page, and was surprised to see the next page labeled "Chapter One,” which appeared to be an autobiographical account of how a young Simon Clark was initiated into a gang and ultimately grew up to be a writer. While that’s all fascinating stuff, I’m sure, I was really hoping to finish reading the story I had started.

I'm not sure if this was a bindery mistake or if the novella really ended there (“I’m sorry, I’ve just killed him.”), and everything after that point is just… I don’t know… some type of authorial masturbation.

I have nothing against experimental fiction or what some might call "Avant Garde." But this was neither. It was just poor editing, plain and simple. N.E.P. should consider hiring professionals who can do a better job of pulling this sort of thing off, because it isn’t clear at all what they were trying to do here. (Something as simple as a couple of blank pages after the end, before adding the "bio". Or maybe the words "THE END")

I shouldn't need to spend an hour at the end of a book trying to figure out WTF just happened. There are too many other good books for sale that I can read instead.
