I'm going to attempt to leave this spoiler free. Here we go...
Wow! I have read this author's first two books (in another ongoing series) and this is a HUGE departure from those.
1. Check your TWs. I do not have a lot of triggers but could see this being a difficult read for some. There are discussions of sexual assault, death of a child, forced imprisonment, detailed torture/murder, and more ...
- In my opinion, there is enough detail to engage the reader/make them care without being gratuitous. Nothing is mentioned for just shock factor and I think it's done well.
2. This isn't a happy story. Even the "protagonists" are not incredibly redeemable but I did still find myself rooting for them. I connected with the FMC even though, frankly, and through no fault of her own, she's not a "nice" person. There's a reason she is the way that she is but she's still not a true heroine (in the traditional sense). There's nothing compassionate or kind about her. She's pissed and is unapologetic in her pursuit of revenge.
3. The plot, light world building, and supernatural elements are there but this is definitely a character driven book (my favorite).
4. If you do not enjoy themes of feminism, this is not the book for you. To me, that was the underlying theme throughout with all of the characters. This looks like working through SA trauma, ideas of a woman's role, reclaiming their sexuality or identity, and more.
5. Riz is the best character in this book and you'll never convince me otherwise.
6. I knew that this book was shorter for the author but that cliff hanger...
Overall, it's incredibly well-written without feeling the pompous overuse of a thesaurus that I sometimes get with fantasy books. It's interesting and captivating. 188 pages that feel like 50. Super quick read with no filler. If it is on the page, it matters. Highly recommend.
