About the author

Isaac Bashevis Singer was a Polish American author of Jewish descent, noted for his short stories. He was one of the leading figures in the Yiddish literary movement, and received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1978.
His memoir, "A Day Of Pleasure: Stories of a Boy Growing Up in Warsaw", won the U.S. National Book Award in Children's Literature in 1970, while his collection "A Crown of Feathers and Other Stories" won the U.S. National Book Award in Fiction in 1974.

I.B. Singer Comes To America

"Lost in America" is the third part of I.B. Singer's memoir of his early life following "A Little Boy in Search of God" and "A Young Man in Search of Love". In 1986, Singer combined the three parts into a new book, "Love and Exile: An Autobiographical Trilogy." I have the good fortune of owning the three original books, two of which I received as gifts. The books are keepsakes, beautifully printed, and with drawings and illustrations. Raphael Soyer's illustrations to "Lost in America" are sufficient to make the book precious.

"Lost in America" begins in 1935 in Warsaw under the shadow of Nazism. Singer, 28, is about to receive documents allowing him to travel to America where his older brother, the novelist I.J. Singer, works in New York City. The memoir describes Singer's last few weeks in Warsaw, his passage by train through Nazi Germany and by ship to America, and the first few years of his difficult life in a new country.

The memoir is introspective with its portrayal of Singer's loneliness, his sense of failure and almost suicidal depression, and his reflections on philosophy and on the existence of God and of the pervasive character of suffering and evil. Singer also reflects on sexuality as the constant theme of his writing, describing more than once the theme of his writing as the never-ending variety of relationships between men and women. Early in the memoir, Singer writes: "My number-one passion was the adventure of love, the endless varieties and tensions peculiar to the relationship between the sexes."

The memoir is also descriptive of Singer's life and his surroundings. The strongest depictions occur early in the book of the life in Warsaw that Singer is leaving behind, including his contacts with other Yiddish writers and the lively political discussions of the day. The focus, however, is on the three women with whom Singer was carrying on affairs at the time. The train journey through Germany and the ocean crossing are described in detail showing Singer's loneliness and depression. In the final section of the book, Singer discusses his life in America where it appeared he would be doomed to failure as a result of writer's block and disorientation in what would become his adopted country. Singer quickly becomes involved in new love relationships while being haunted by those of his past. The book offers portrayals of downtown Manhattan, Greenwich Village, Coney Island and other places as seen from the perspective of a new immigrant who, even with the threat of Nazism, has been unable to move on fully from his earlier life.

Readers find in books passages that speak immediately to them. While Singer is on the ship to the United States, he reads Henri Bergson's book "Creative Evolution" which at the time was highly popular. I have read "Creative Evolution" before and am currently re-reading it in a study group. I was taken with Singer's comment on his shipboard reading:

"I was so engrossed in Bergson's work that for a while I forgot about my spiritual crisis. One didn't have to be a professional philosopher to recognize that Bergson was a talented writer, a Schongeist, [aesthete], not a philosopher, This was an elegant book, interestingly written, but lacking any new concepts. "Elan vital" is a pretty phrase but Bergson didn't even try to explain how it came to be a creative power. I had already grown accustomed to works that evoke a sensation of originality at the beginning only to find that when the reader reaches the last page, he is just as wise as he had been at the first."

The book on the whole is sad with the author's many misadventures and shyness and self-centeredness. The future Nobel Prize recipient reflects at the memoir's conclusion: "I am lost in America. Lost forever." Yet there is a sense of humor, of liveliness, and of moving forward in the telling. I could understand the author not only for his reading of Bergson but broadly through his religious, mystical questioning combined with his search for sexuality and love. It was a moving experience to revisit again with Singer through this book and its two companion volumes.

"ওয়ারশর সাহিত্য জগতটা ছিল স্বজনপ্রীতি, দল ও গোষ্ঠী-প্রীতিতে ভরা। 'তুমি আমার পিঠ চুলকাও, তাহলে আমিও তোমার পিঠ চুলকে দেব'-এই ছিল সবার নীতি।" বাক্যের আদিতে "ওয়ারশ" লেখা না থাকলে ধরেই নিতাম এখানে ঢাকার কথা বলা হচ্ছে। সিঙ্গার তার যৌবনকালের সংগ্রাম, আমেরিকায় গমণ, সেখানে যেয়ে আরো আরো সংগ্রাম, ভিসা বাড়ানোর জন্য বিভিন্ন পদক্ষেপ নেওয়া, নিজের লেখকজীবনের উন্মেষকালের গল্প বয়ান করেছেন। তার প্রজ্ঞা, অনুভব ও জীবন বিষাদে আচ্ছন্ন ("রাস্তায় নেমে নিকালা রোডের দিকে ছুটতে লাগলাম।ওয়ারশ'কে হঠাৎ বিদেশি শহর বলে মনে হলো। দোকানপাট, দালানকোঠা, ট্রাম,রাস্তা ইত্যাদি আমি অল্পই চিনতে পারছিলাম। ইহুদিদের ধর্মীয় আইনের গেমারার' একটা কথা মনে পড়ে গেল:'যা পুড়ে যাওয়ার অবস্থায় এসে দাঁড়িয়েছে, তা ইতোমধ্যেই পুড়ে গেছে।' আমি মনে মনে এর ভাষান্তর করলাম: 'যা ত্যাগ করার প্রস্তুতি নেওয়া হচ্ছে, তা ইতোমধ্যেই ত্যাগ করা হয়েছে।') সংশয়ও উঁকি দিয়েছে থেকে থেকে ("আমি ঈশ্বরকে নিয়ে বাঁচতে পারি না, তাকে ছাড়াও বাঁচতে পারি না।") এই আত্মকথন পড়ে তার চোখে দেখা আমেরিকা অধরা রয়ে যায় অবশ্য, তিনি নিজেতেই স্থিত ছিলেন। লেখক যেভাবে নিজেকে হারিয়েছেন, হারিয়ে খুঁজে ফিরেছেন তার সঙ্গে আমাদের প্রায় সবার জীবনেরই কমবেশি মিল রয়েছে।সিঙ্গারের আত্মজীবনীর অন্য দুই খণ্ড এখন কই পাই?

আইজ্যাক বাশেভিস সিঙ্গার ছিলেন পোল্যান্ডের অধিবাসী একজন ইহুদী লেখক। সময়টা ১৯৩৫ সাল জার্মানির সুসময়, নাজিদের ক্ষমতার কাল। আর কয়েক বছর পরেই ধুমাধুম যুদ্ধ শুরু হবে। সেই সময়ে আইজ্যাক সাহেবের বড় ভাই আমেরিকা থেকে ভিসার ব্যবস্থা করে ছোট ভাইকে আমেরিকায় নিয়ে যান। টুরিস্ট ভিসায় গিয়েছেন বিধায় ভিসার মেয়াদ শেষ হওয়ার আগেই আবার আবেদন করতে হয় সময় বাড়ানোর এটা একটা ঝামেলাই বটে। এরপর নানা হ্যাপা সামলে ব্যবস্থা করেন পাকাপাকি নাগরিকত্বের।
পাঠকের সঙ্গে আইজ্যাক সাহেবের পরিচয় হয় পোল্যান্ডে। তখন থেকেই আমরা পাঠকরা তার সাথে লেপ্টে থাকি। তিনি যখন পোল্যান্ডে একটার পর একটা প্রেম করছেন তখনও আমরা তার সাথে ছিলাম। যখন তিনি নাজি অধ্যুসিত দেশের ভেতর দিয়ে ট্রেনে করে যাত্রা করেন আমেরিকাগামী জাহাজ ধরার জন্য তখনও আমরা তার সাথে ছিলাম। এরপর অবশেষে যখন তিনি আমেরিকায় পা ফেলেন তখনও আমরা তার সাথেই ছিলাম। একদম কাছ থেকেই দেখেছি তার জীবনাচরণ।
তিনি অনেক ঝুঁকিপূর্ণ কাজ করে বসেন সেজন্য আবার প্রচণ্ড স্মায়ু চাপেও ভোগেন। তখন তাকে কেমন বেদিশা লাগে। জীবনের নানা ধাপে যে গড়বড় করেন তখন পাঠক হিসেবেই রাগ লাগে। চিৎকার করে বলতে ইচ্ছে করে এটা কেন করলেন? কিন্তু পরক্ষণেই মানুষটার জন্য মায়াও লাগে। কারো সাহায্য নিতে চান না আবার নিজেও সামলাতে পারেন না এ এক ভয়ংকর অবস্থা। কিছু বলারও নাই ভীষণ রকম ইন্ট্রোভার্ট মানুষদের এমনই ঘটে।

আইজ্যাক বাশেভিস সিঙ্গার লেখক হিসেবে উনার নাম আগে শুনলেও উনার কোন লেখা পড়া হয়নি আমার। গত বই মেলায় উনার স্মৃতিকথার অনুবাদটি প্রকাশিত হয়। যে কারো স্মৃতিকথা পড়তে ভালো লাগে। আর ইনি ত রীতিমতো লেখক। এইটা না পড়লে কীভাবে হয়।
শুরুতে অনুবাদ বেস কঠিনই লেগেছে এরপর কিছু পৃষ্ঠা পড়ার পর অভ্যস্ত হয়ে যাই এবং গড়গড় করে পড়ে ফেলি বইটা। তবে অনুবাদ আরো সাবলীল করা যেত বলে মনে হয়েছে। যাহোক বেঙ্গলবুকস এর বইয়ের এই সাইজটা খুবই কিউট। সব মিলিয়ে বইয়ের প্রডাকশন চমৎকার।

It's interesting to think about being lost. Everybody is lost at some point in their life. And this is a good book for everyone who feels that way. Isaac Singer's autobiographical book about coming to live in America and then feeling lost is a true and unique example of how feeling lost feels like. But he ends this with a note of hopelessness but if you really want to read it then don't forget that Isaac got rid of this feeling and continued to be a prolific writer and won the Nobel price. :) So all of these feelings of "being lost" can be overcome! So definitely recommend to all the lost people out there.

Ich bin vor etwa 15 Jahren zum ersten Mal über Singer gestolpert, als mir in Marokko der Lesestoff ausging und ich in einem kleinen aber gutsortierten Buchladen in Casablanca eine Sammlung seiner Kurzgeschichten auf Französisch aufgegabelt habe. Seitdem habe ich viel von ihm gelesen und das merkwürdige ist, egal ob ich ihn auf Deutsch, Englisch oder Französisch gelesen habe, immer ist der Tonfall und die Diktion die gewohnte. Noch merkwürdiger ist es nunmehr seine Autobiographie zu lesen, die sich liest, wie seine Geschichten. Die Charaktere oder besser Typen scheint man alle bereits aus seinen Erzählungen zu kennen, so dass sich dieses Werk auch nicht wirklich wie eine Autobiographie, sondern wie ein Roman liest. Wie immer bei Singer ein Roman, mit einem schüchternen, egozentrischen und lebensuntauglichen Protagonisten, der in allerlei Liebeshändel verstrickt ist, mit Gott hadert und dessen Lebensweg sich bei allen Schicksalsschlägen immer zum guten wendet. Dabei erweckt Singer - wie immer - die versunkene Welt des Stetls, das egal ob in Galizien, in Warschau oder in New York gleichermaßen lebhaft magisch und gleichermaßen für immer verloren ist.

Vor diesem Hintergrund sagt demLeser Singer entweder zu und man stört sich nicht daran, immer wieder das gleiche mit neuen Facetten zu lesen, oder man kann nichts mit ihm anfangen. Ich gehöre zu den Ersteren.

I got a sense of deja vu while reading this book and then I realized that a lot of the events were also used in Singer's short story 'Coney Island.' Still, this book had more. It begins in Poland as the young Singer tries to achieve some recognition as a writer with limited success. He is also involved with a number of women in strange relationships that defy description. He was fortunate to get out of Poland before Hitler invaded. But a good portion of this book is concerned with his efforts to stay in America after his visitor visa expired. That required a caper that took him to Detroit and then Toronto. The book ends on a desperate note with Singer out of work and barely able to afford to eat. He did have a brother who was doing well in NY and could keep his younger brother alive so in the back of the reader's mind is this safety net which tempers the despair that the author experienced. It was pride that prevented him from going to his brother for help. But he was also suffering from the kind of anxiety which renders the normal person nearly catatonic. All in all, this is classic Singer, which is always worth reading.

Warum ist Singer verloren? Schon spannend geschrieben, die Lebensgeschichte des Autors. Oder des Teils, den er uns hier darlegt. Dabei ist die Zeit in Polen viel lebendiger beschrieben. Womöglich mit Absicht, um uns zu zeigen, wie schlecht es ihm in Amerika ging. Dabei hatte er objektiv keinen Grund zu klagen. Dem Nazi-Terror entwischt, leidlich erfolgreich im schönsten Land der Welt lebend. Aber was ist schon objektiv? 7/10

আইজ্যাক সিঙ্গারের লেখা আমি বেশ পছন্দ করি। কমই পড়া হইছে কিন্তু সে যে দারুণ লেখে এবং অন্য একটা দুনিয়ার সন্ধান দেন সেটা স্পষ্ট। তারই আত্মজীবনীমূলক স্মৃতিচারণ এই বই। কীভাবে তিনি আমেরিকায় গেলেন আর সেখানে হারিয়ে গেলেন সেই আখ্যান।

দিলওয়ার হাসান অনুবাদ করেছেন। তার দুই তিনটা কবিতা আমার পছন্দ। অনুবাদ ভালো করবেন সেই আশা ছিল তবে কিছুটা আশাহত। আরেকটু নিজস্ব গদ্য ব্যবহার করতে পারতেন হয়তম অনেক জায়গায়ই কাটখোট্টা নির্লিপ্ত বয়ানের মতো লাগল। এমন বইয়ে সেটা হওয়া উচিত না আরকি।

“Ik hield mezelf vaak voor dat ik dolblij zou moeten zijn. Op de zeldzame momenten dat ik alleen gelaten werd, stelde ik mezelf steeds dezelfde vraag: ben je nu gelukkig of althans tevreden? Maar het antwoord luidde steevast - nee.”
Dit is het tweede boek van Singer dat ik las - na ‘Vijanden: een liefdesroman’ - en ook hier gaat een onweerstaanbare aantrekkingskracht uit van zijn pen die gedrenkt is in een milde spottende vorm van humor en overloopt van subtiele karakterschetsen die mij zeer weten te bekoren.
‘Reddeloos verloren in Amerika’ vertelt hoe Singer als schrijver in 1935 uit Warschau naar Amerika emigreerde. Hitler staat voor de poorten van Polen en Singer beseft dat talmen om te emigreren geen optie is. We zijn getuige van zijn laatste dagen in Warschau, en ook van zijn chaotische, op materieel opzicht arme, maar geestelijk (en amoureus) rijke leven aldaar. Maar eens in Amerika is het niet al koek en ei, wel integendeel. De demonen waartegen hij vecht zijn niet meer Stalin of de nazis, maar zijn eigen neurotische geest die hem verlamt en verwart. Zijn seksuele begeertes zijn levendig en zonder gene vertelt hij over zijn liederlijke leven en zijn vele vriendinnen. Maar het mag niet baten, niets lijkt hem te kunnen verlossen van zijn ‘condition humaine’...
Meer Jood dan Singer kan je niet zijn. Zijn vader en grootvader waren rabbijnen en hij schreef ook in het Jiddisch. De leefwereld in zijn boeken is Jiddisch maar de gedachten en de psychologie van ons hoofdkarakter zijn universeel en diepmenselijk. Ik was vertederd tijdens het lezen en ik voelde een diepe genegenheid voor de gevechten die Singer voerde. Het boek voelt bij momenten een beetje gedateerd omdat de wereld ondertussen zoveel veranderd is, maar wie zijn slimme stijl en tedere taal weet te proeven zal zich met dit boek zeker vermaken.
“Ik had me overgegeven aan melancholie en was er de gevangene van. Ik deed wat ze verlangde - verbeuzelde mijn tijd met loos gemijmer, met gewroet in mezelf dat voor mij noch voor anderen enig nut kon hebben, aan gespeur naar iets dat ik nooit was kwijtgeraakt. Ik had de schepping een ultimatum gesteld: verklap me je geheim of laat me omkomen.”

সিঙ্গারের লেখা প্রথম পড়ি সেবা হতে প্রকাশিত "সিঙ্গারের রহস্য গল্প" নামের গল্প সংকলন বইতে৷ ৭/৮ বছর আগে পড়া হলেও এখনো মনে আছে, বেশ কিছু গল্প খুবই চমৎকৃত করেছিলোঃ বিষয়, আঙ্গিক আর বর্ণনা শৈলীতে। খুবই আগ্রহ জেগেছিলো তখন লেখকের অন্যান্য লেখা নিয়ে।

বহুদিন পরে লেখকের আত্মজীবনী পেয়ে স্বাভাবিকভাবেই বেশ কৌতুহল জেগে উঠে। বইটার সময়কাল ১৯৩৫, দ্বিতীয় বিশ্বযুদ্ধ শুরু হবে আর কয়েক বছরের মধ্যেই। ইউরোপ জুড়ে প্রাক-যুদ্ধকালীন দমবন্ধ করা অবস্থায় অনেক ইহুদিই তখন বেনামে পালাচ্ছে আমেরিকায়। সিঙ্গারও তেমনি করে পালিয়ে আসেন একদিন, নতুন পরিবেশে, নতুন দেশে ইডিশভাষী লেখকের নিজেকে মানিয়ে নেওয়ার সত্য গল্প "আমি কেমন করে আমেরিকায় হারিয়ে গিয়েছিলাম"।

কাকতালীয় ভাবে, এই বইটার আগেই পড়ে শেষ করেছি এরিক মারিয়া রেমার্কের " আর্চ অব ট্রায়াম্ফ"৷ সময়কাল সেই একই, ১৯৩৩ থেকে দ্বিতীয় বিশ্বযুদ্ধ শুরু আগ পর্যন্ত। থমথমে দমবন্ধ করা পরিস্থিতি ইউরোপজুড়ে। দুটো বইয়ের সাথে কানেক্ট করা গেলো তাই বেশ। চমৎকার লেগেছে।

অনুবাদ আরেকটু সহজপাচ্য হতে পারতো বলে মনে হলো।

U ovom romanu Singer je u večitom raskoraku. Duboko autobiografsko delo je više od priče o imigraciji; to je mučno i iskreno ispitivanje identiteta, vere i gubitka korena. Singer, poznati pripovedač života u istočnoevropskom shtetl-u, ovde bez pardona prikazuje sopstvenu dezorijentisanost i moralnu zbunjenost u novoj, sekularnoj Americi. Njegova proza je jednostavna, ali promućurna, prožeta ironijom i filozofskom potragom za smislom. Iako radnja više teče kroz kontemplaciju nego kroz dramu, ova knjiga ostaje upečatljiv portret čoveka između dva sveta – sveta koji je trajno nestao i onog koji mu nikada neće postati pravi dom. Obavezno štivo za ljubitelje ozbiljne književnosti i one koji razmišljaju o ceni napretka i slobode.

Verloren in Poland and lost in Amerika. In 1935 Amerika should have been the safe place, but it wasn’t. What happened to humanity? Trying to find himself; trying to find a solid ground; so many unanswered questions. Trying to find a new way of life. Is that loneliness and emptiness actually the main condition for a new literature? Would that literature be the safe place and for how long? Even a moment would be enough.

Thoroughly loved this book. The way Mr. Singer writes is so welcoming. He pulls you into his story telling. You can feel the heat in his room. You can feel his hopelessness. You relate to his feelings of not belonging, of questioning your religion, and your very existence. He was quite the lady's man. While reading, I kept thinking it should be a movie. While he did have some books made into movies, sadly this one was not.

পোল্যান্ডের জন্মগ্রহণ করেছিলেন অ্যাইজ্যাক বাশেভিস যিঙ্গার। রক্ষণশীল ইহুদি পরিবারে জন্ম নেওয়ায় পোলিশ ভাষার লেখক না হয়ে হয়েছিলেন ঈডিশ ভাষার লেখক। উচ্চমানের লেখক হওয়া সত্ত্বেও দারিদ্র্যতা আর ইহুদি বিরোধী আচরণ ছিল তার দৈনন্দিন নিত্যসঙ্গী। পোল্যান্ডে আসন্ন জার্মান আক্রমণ তাকে ইউরোপ ছেড়ে আমেরিকা পাড়ি জমাতে বাধ্য করে। আমেরিকাতে গিয়ে নতুন দেশ, ভাষা, মানুষ আর সংস্কৃতির মাঝে নিজেকে অনুসন্ধান করার প্রয়াস একসময় তার নিজেকে হারিয়ে ফেলার কারণ হয়ে দাঁড়ায়।

Jidiš on tänaseks peaaegu hääbunud keel, aga eksistentsiaalses kriisis (depressioonis?) nimitegelane on kirjanik, kes kirjutab just selles keeles. See muudab tema rännaku (nii füüsilises kui ka emotsionaalses plaanis) ja melanhoolia kuidagi eriti huvitavaks. Kas ta juba aimas, et keel (ja kogu keeleruum), mida ta esindab, on peagi kadunud?
Huvitav lugemine mitmes mõttes - ühelt poolt ajalooraamatuna (emigreerunud juudi lugu meeleoludest II MS eelsest paranoilisest Euroopast ja groteskselt optimistlikust Ameerikast) teisalt aga introvertse inimese heitlusena uues keskkonnas kohanemisel. Ja selle viimasega suudab ilmselt samastuda pea iga eestlane (stereotüüpselt lähenedes on meil ju läbinisti introvertne kultuur), kes on pidanud kuskil uues (võõras) kohas kohanema - näiteks välismaal õppides või reisides.
