Jeff Parker treats us to the best Avengers since Ty Templeton’s all too short run on the Avengers United from the late '90s. This blows away the entire Avenger “proper” titles Marvel has been producing for nearly twenty years, and in my opinion is the best the team has ever been handled. Parker’s Avengers are made up of Captain America, Storm, Iron Man, The Hulk, Giant-Girl, Wolverine and Spider-Man. The team buts heads with great villains like M.O.D.O.C., the Black Knight, Morgan Lefay, the Serpent Society and Ego the Living Planet (in this case Loving Planet.) The volume collects Marvel Adventures Mighty Avengers #9-12. I am a bit puzzled why Spider-Man and two X-Men are on the team, but, hey, good’s good. The first story “Everybody’s M.O.D.O.K. (Mental Organism Designed Only for Killing) is the standout. The Avengers become the Mod-Avengers when M.O.D.O.K makes them all into M.O.D.O.K.’s. The other standout is “Ego the Loving Planet” who's actually here to hit on Mother Earth -- seriously; he’s here to hit on our planet. Parker is one of maybe four mainstream creators who are actually not trapped in the maudlin, we wish we were writing for Vertigo rut, and is creating wickedly fun and imaginative comic book stories. If you miss fun super hero comics, do yourself a favor and check out this book.
Marvel's all-ages Avengers book is the team at its goofiest, but maybe also most entertaining. These four stories feature re-tooled versions of Modok, Morgan Le Fay, the Serpent Society, and Ego the Living Planet. It also features Spider-Man saying "The Suxxor" and Giant Girl exclaiming "Snakes on a Quinjet." Jeff Parker has a lot of fun with this book, though a lot of the single-issue stories bog down at the end. Juan Santacruz does a good job with all the main characters cobbled together for the team, though his Modok version of the characters are ugly.
Charming and fun, these Avengers tales feature some of the best - and most whimsical work by Jeff Parker (who is, for my money, one of the top writers in comics today). Worth reading for the story of how M.O.D.O.K and hapless A.I.M. lackey "Karl" transforms the entire Avengers team into M.O.D.O.K.s. You know you are having a blast when the Leader has the smallest head on the page, and the altered Avengers (who, somehow, are still in their costumes despite being GIANT HEADS with TINY BODIES) gleefully make fun of his inferior intellect. A treat!
More complete and utter adorableness. Here the Avengers face off against MODOC (the C stands for Conquest, not Killing, although honestly I was kind of hoping for Cuddling), Morgan LeFay (Jan and Peter are obsessed with her World of Slaycraft video game, ha), the Serpent Society (Snakes! On a Quinjet!) and Ego (who literally hits on the Earth).
This series is amazing and cute and I love it to pieces.
Reprints Marvel Adventures: The Avengers #9-12. The Avengers battle M. O. D. O. C., Morgan Le Fay, the Serpent Society, and Ego the Living Planet. This collection has possibly the funniest single issue I've read in a long time in any series. The Ego the Living Planet issue was so well done that this collection should be purchased just for it.
Sometimes I think the comics written for the younger crowd are often even better than the regular ones. The humor is fantastic, and the take on the characters is so very fun. Plus, almost no angst. Win all around.
The final issue in this volume is one of my favorites even if it is from a children's comic. The art in this series is always a little inconsistent, but nothing here was too distracting. This is one of the best volumes in this series.
