All parents relish that very first cry from their newborn baby. Yet as the crying continues it can become deeply stressful. And no sooner have you worked out what your young baby is trying to tell you—often hunger, fatigue, or discomfort—than they grow older and the reasons more complex—teething pain, anxiety, or simply frustration. Here, Gina Ford outlines the common triggers for each specific age group, whether it's a five-week-old or a 10-month-old, to help you determine the most likely cause for your baby's distress so that you can respond to their needs and quickly comfort and settle them. Full of practical tips such as encouraging parents to "stop, look, listen," and lots of reassuring advice, your baby—and you—will soon be calm and content once more.
I've given this book 3 stars because it does contain clear information in plain language. However it doesn't really contain any better information than you could find on a reliable parenting website. And to be honest it's all pretty much common sense stuff - the kind of advice passed down from mother to mother. If you're not keen on trawling the internet for information and would rather have it at your fingertips then this is probably a good purchase but if you know other mothers and have a fair idea about what unsettles a baby then this probably isn't the book for you.
Small and easy to read. But, Gina Ford's "sleep program" doesn't seem right for my baby. She has you put baby down for naps at certain times each day. I prefer watching for signals that baby is tired and assuming the 90 minute alert period (as in the "90-Minute Baby Sleep Program" book I read earlier). But, I certainly gained some motherly tips from the book. I say we can never learn/read enough baby manuals=)!!
