Sie zählen zu den bedeutendsten Politikern ihrer Generation und sie verbindet eine langjährige Freundschaft. Sie stehen für Zuverlässigkeit, wegweisende Entscheidungen und klare, oft unbequeme Positionen. Sie treffen sich - diesmal nicht zum Schachspielen, sondern um über große politische Themen zu reden, die zurzeit die Menschen bewegen. Obwohl fast dreißig Jahre zwischen Helmut Schmidt und Peer Steinbrück liegen, werden die beiden oft in einem Atemzug genannt - Elder Statesman und moralische Instanz der eine, spätestens seit der Finanzkrise Garant für politische Geradlinigkeit der andere: Hier tauschen sich zwei überzeugte Sozialdemokraten aus, die vieles von dem, was ihre Partei an Beschlüssen in die Welt setzt, nicht gutheißen können. Ob sie über die Risse im Fundament unseres Sozialstaates reden oder über die Ignoranz mancher Funktionseliten, ob sie die Verschiebung der globalen ökonomischen Gewichte diskutieren oder die verheerenden Auswüchse des weltweiten Raubtierkapitalismus: Immer wieder kehrt das Gespräch zu der Ausgangsfrage zurück, wie das Primat des Politischen auch in Zukunft gewahrt und die wachsende Kluft zwischen Regierten und Regierenden geschlossen werden kann.

I thoroughly enjoyed this conversation between Helmut Schmidt (1918-2015) and Peer Steinbrück (*1947). Both are very knowledgeable and eloquent and two of the most respectable persons of the Social Democratic Party. They obviously like each other and are at ease during the conversation which permits them to speak openly. For example, they use swearwords like shit which they do not do in official or public contexts. I noticed how Schmidt in his old age is increasingly melancholic and pessimistic. That does not mean that his analyses are not profound, precise and objective, they are. Especially in the areas of economics and finances both have considerable experience and insight. But still it seems to me that Schmidt is growing frustrated and impatient with the mistakes that are committed by current politicians. Against the backdrop of this conversation, which took place in 2011, I believe that the disastrous campaign by Steinbrück as the candidate for the chancellorship in 2013 was a missed chance for the SPD.

Ich mag die beiden sehr, ich liebe es wie sie die Dinge auf den Punkt bringen aber dabei pragmatisch bleiben und nicht in den üblichen parteipolitischen Dogmatismus verfallen.

"Zug um Zug" von den beiden SPD Grössen Helmut Schmidt und Peer Steinbrück ist eigentlich, auch wenn dies im Vorwort negiert wird, ein Wahlprogramm und eine Legitimation der damaligen politischen Instanz Helmut Schmidt für Peer Steinbrück. Es kommt nie eine richtige Diskussion auf sondern es wird sich fröhlich pfeifend ständig Ergänzt. Ein. paar Spitzen gegen die CDU und Merkel sowie gegen die komplett unfähige FDP dürfen natürlich nicht fehlen. Auch die moralische Überheblichkeit von Schmidt, der von allen Politikern verlangt, dass sie Kulturell sehr gebildet sind, kommt wieder zum Vorschein.

Nichtsdestotrotz ist es ein spannendes Buch, dass nun ca. 10 Jahre nach Erscheinen natürlich spannende Einblicke in die damaligen Vorgänge gibt und vor allem die Abhandlung der Finanzkrise, der Regulation der Finanzbranche natürlich sehr sehr spannend sind. Auch die Vorhersage Helmut Schmidts betreffend der Radikalisierung der Republikanischen Partei ist natürlich sehr spannend. Wäre interessant zu erfahren, wie Schmidt über die Wahl von Trump gedacht hätte.

Prinzipiell erfährt man, gerade als geübter Helmut Schmidt Leser, nicht wirklich neues.

Any book by Helmut Schmidt is worth reading, and "Zug um Zug" is no exception. This book consists of discussions between Helmut Schmidt and Peer Steinbrück about current political probelms, not as much about day-to-day politics, but rather about broader issues, as well as personal experience. I don't agree with everything the former Chancellor Schmidt says, as I haven't done with some of his previous work, but even with things I disagree with, I respect his oppinion because it's things he's been dealing with for decades and his oppinion is based on facts and analysis rather than any election or polls, or whatever. There is a reason why this man who is turning 93 this December is highly respected in Germany to this date, and his personal habits as well as his way of saying whatever he thinks make this book really worthwile reading. It's not as much deep politics as two very intelligent men and (former) high profile politicians talking, one of them being one of the most famous and respected former German chancellors, the other one of the most respected former ministers - and maybe Germany's next Chancellor...
