There are ways to get ahead in college hockey, but having a meltdown, trying to get rid of your coach, and stalking his boyfriend isn’t one of them. Is it really a surprise that I wound up in a hospital facing my demons instead of getting ready to play for the pros and taking care of my baby? I needed the world’s biggest redo, but the probability of a second chance was about the same as…
Jack Rogan walking through the door. But there he was! Jack was one of my coaches, and I was pretty sure he was straight. His easy laugh and sympathetic ear put a smile on my face. He made me believe I could turn my life around. But as much as I liked him, I knew I had to put my fantasies aside. With obligations to meet and amends to make, I didn’t have time to obsess about a guy who was out of my reach.
So why did I say yes when he offered me a place to stay while I got on my feet?
Jack
I was done with relationships. A fractured heart had made sure my walls were high, and my shields were strong. There wasn’t a man I couldn’t resist—until Eckie.
After driving everyone away in an avalanche of self-destruction, he was getting much needed help, and I wondered if I should go see him. A single visit turned into the best part of every day, and I was hooked. When I was with Eckie, the world made sense again. There were only two years separating us, but since I was one of his coaches, spending time together was dangerous. If we kept it up, who knew what I might do?
Maybe something brilliant, like asking him to stay with me when he left the hospital. I knew it was risky, and I told myself I was only being a friend. But the truth was, I liked feeling things again.
Eckie was seeking redemption; Jack was trying to do the right thing. Neither planned on anything beyond friendship. Will following their hearts leave them worse than before, or will they find what they’ve needed all along?
Back to Center is a story of redemption and the unexpected love a man finds in a friend he never knew he’d have. It also includes exciting hockey, a coach/player dynamic, great communication, unquenchable longing giving way to irrepressible heat, an adorable baby, and a perfect HEA.
Content warnings for depression and physical/emotional abuse by parents. The abuse happened in the past, but knowing about it may be difficult for some.
Back to Center is book two in the Mohegan U Hockey series by Ryan Taylor and Joshua Harwood. I loved this book so much. There is just so much here. I fell completely in love with these two men.
If you read the first book in this series, Cracks in the Ice, then you’ve met Eckie and probably have an opinion about him. I know I did. I wasn’t sure if he could redeem himself after the way he behaved. But oh my heart, he did. Roland ‘Eckie’ Eckhart is twenty one years old, plays for the hockey team at Mohegan University, and is gay. Only there are people in Eckie’s life who believe that being gay is a sin. His life has been tumultuous to say the least. After alienating his entire team, he knows he needs help and has checked himself into a hospital over the summer break. He was so surprised when his assistant coach came to visit him and continued to visit every single day. When it was time to be released, he had nowhere to go and Jack offered to let him stay with him until he got back on his feet.
Jack Rogan has always wanted to be a hockey coach and loves his job at Mohegan. He is only two years older than Eckie. He first went to see him to offer some support and it was supposed to be a one time thing. But he couldn’t stay away. He looked forward to his visits every day. He hadn’t planned to have Eckie move in with him either but it just sort of came out. He wasn’t sure why but he just wanted him close.
Eckie has a one year old son, Levi, and his priority is to be a part of his life, to be a good dad and a good example. He also has to prove himself to his coach again and his team members. He knows he has an uphill battle but he’s determined to make right everything he did wrong.
Jack and Eckie did everything right. They became friends, they fought their attraction but when they finally gave in, they took their time. I have to say, here, that these two together were amazing. The support they gave one another, the bond they formed, it was beautiful. And once they were in, they were all in. No petty disagreements, they listened to each other and held each other up in every way. Not to mention the way Jack was with Eckie’s son.
“If you hadn’t believed in me, I don’t think I could have learned to believe in myself.”
That’s not to say their path was easy. Eckie has people in his life that don’t agree with the way he lives and they will do whatever possible to try to change him. This book also made me fall even more in love with the coach, Benny, the main character of the first book. He is truly an amazing, supportive man and he protects his players.
This book had a little bit of everything, plenty of sweet, sexy, swoons, and some danger. I couldn’t put it down. I am enjoying this series so much and can’t wait to see what these two authors do next.

Eckie and Jack were a really sweet read. I loved how these two came together, communicated with each other right from the get-go and supported each other unconditionally. The addition of Levi in the book was great. He added a fun dynamic to this found family that loved each other something fierce.
It was great being in this hockey world again. I love the cast of characters and look forward to reading about more of them in the future. This husband author duo has a great thing going here, they know how to write about love, friendships and family ❤️❤️❤️
I really enjoyed this MM hockey romance full of love, found family, second chances and mental health struggles. While this book is a standalone, I would highly recommend reading Benny and Cole’s story in Cracks in the Ice as we really get to see the struggles that one of the MCs is still dealing with.
This is Eckie and Jack’s story.
During the first book in the series, we see Eckie seriously struggle with making good decisions. When this book starts, Eckie is in a facility who is helping him manage his depression. Jack, one of the assistant coaches who is only a couple of years older than Eckie, starts stopping by to visit Eckie and ends up visiting him daily. They formed a strong connection and when Eckie is left with nowhere to go, Jack opens his home to Eckie.
While they are living together, Jack is a constant presence in Eckie’s life and they get closer and closer. The closer they get to each other, the more they want to take the next steps.
When they decide to take the next steps in their relationship, there are people in Eckie’s life who don’t want that and do everything that they can to ruin his new found happiness. Will Eckie and Jack be able to find their HEA or will the people around them force them apart?
I loved Jack and Eckie’s friendship turned relationship! I love the friends to lovers trope and that was strong here. But my absolute FAVORITE part of this book was Eckie’s teammates and their support of not only Eckie and Jack, but Eckie as a hockey player. He had a lot to make up for after the last season, but after the initial shock of him being back wore off, his teammates fully supported him. And man, the ending where they all came together made me tear up. The hockey team was his found family and it was so great to see that transformation.
I didn't much enjoy the first book in this series, but this one was about Eckie - the villain in the last book, and he was such a compelling character because he was an absolute dick. 'How will they make this work when he was just so terrible?', I asked myself, excited to see what we get. Welp, Eckie got a personality transplant, that's how. He spends the Summer between the books in a treatment centre for mental health issues and comes out just like a totally different person, devoid of any recognizable personality. The other MC is Jack, the hot assistant coach from book one, who is also a beige wall of a person. This book isn't necessarily bad, but it's sooooooo boring. The authors made some bizarre narrative choices. For example, Jack and Eckie become friends off page - Jack visits Eckie at the hospital and that's that, bffs. We see none of this. In book one, we have them butting heads and the leap from that to 'he brings me milkshake in the hospital every day' just isn't fleshed out enough to make the whole thing believable. There is zero tension, zero chemistry. The way they speak to each feels so unrealistic and even cringey. I mean, I tried, I really did, but I literally do not care what happens to these two and life's too short.
This is my second book in this series and once again these authors have left me speechless! After reading book one I didn’t see how Eckie could be redeemed but this book just did it for me. I loved the growth of Eckie as a character as he matured and went through his self healing journey. The two MCs had chemistry that was sizzling, I can’t wait to read more from these authors.
This was so different in many ways from the first book in the series, but it fits SO perfectly. I don’t know that I ever thought I would love Eckie’s character or want to give him the biggest hug, but he has been utterly redeemed here. He’s gone through so much historically and continues to deal with a lot, but now he shows so much maturity and grace and respect for himself and others. His transformation is something to behold. Jack is a rock, and even though he himself is dealing with things, he is so reliable and dependable and gracious that it allows Eckie a safe space to experience the emotions he has. They are a perfect fit, and add in the way they perform as parents… I’m sold! You’re going to want ALL the good things for this pair…
When reading the first book in this series we met Eckie where he didn't really show us his best side. And that is mildly put, he was a real piece of art who hurt Cole badly. But even then you got the feeling that there was more to him, that there was something wrong and that there was more to Eckie than we thought. And I'm glad the authors decided to give him his own story because this was totally worth the wait.
Eckie is one of they players on The Lions team. He was put on 'injury' leave to mask the real reason for his absence. He finally realised he couldn't go on the way he was and has checked himself into hospital where he learned a lot about himself and how he has to cope with his problems and anxieties. He's ready to start life all over again, to fight for his place on the team, be a better father to his little boy and show the only man who has had his back through all his ordeals that he is worthy.
This man is Jack, the assistant-coach of his team, only 2 years his senior. Jack has always felt that there was more to Eckie than meets the eye. He saw in Eckie similar things that he faced himself a few years ago. He decided to not give up on Eckie and help him get through everything. When the time comes for Eckie to leave the hospital, Jack offers him a place to stay at his home.
During Eckie's recovery and the time spent together, both men have developed feelings for one another, but both are afraid to show them. Eckie is only fresh out of the closet and he doesn't even know if Jack is gay. When Jack tells him he is, they start a relationship but keep things really slow. Bit by bit their feelings grow into love.
This was a lovely story about a man finding redemption for things done wrong. How hard work, showing the best side of yourself can change everything. That your past doesn't define who you are, or how you have to behave. I love that there was no drama between both MC's even though they were still rather young (21 and 23). If there was a problem they talked it out and tried to find solutions in the best way possible.
I really like this series and can't wait to see who's story will be next.
*I kindly received a copy of this book from the authors via Bookfunnel. This is my honest opinion.*
Roland Eckhart - Eckie - is seeking to put his life back together. After his severe depression caused him to act out in many destructive ways, he sought treatment. Now his goals are simple. Find a place to stay, get a job and take care of his infant son,Levi. What he doesn’t dare hope for, is to be able to play hockey and finish his senior year at Mohegan University.
Jack Rogan is the only person who visited Eckie in the hospital. They formed a close friendship, and when Eckie is being discharged, Jack offers him a place to stay. Their relationship deepens, old hurts begin to heal and they fall for each other.
This book is an emotional roller coaster in all the best ways. I cried for Eckie, for the abuse he suffered from his religious zealot family, and cheered when he worked so hard to make amends and gained friends along the way. I adored his son, Levi, a sweet little guy who loves music and his father so very much. I laughed and cried and got angry. When a book can bring out so much emotion, you know the authors have done their jobs very, very well. I love this story of redemption, found family, friends to lovers and a hard-won HEA.
*I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.*
This book is about two MC's who have both gone through so much and consequently so much patience and healing has taken place. We catch up with Eckie just coming out of hospital fired up on positivity and optimism armed with lots of tools to help him through. This story starts off as a tight flower bud, two men getting close, discovering feelings but keeping things on the down low. As the story develops there are some dark challenging threats that gives the story some grit and a deeper narrative. As the stroy unfolds there was something so beautiful between these two characters and the bud became a full open flower; proud, adored and with a purpose. I loved the story it was emotional and these two men are absolutely beautiful together. Lots of chemistry and great intimate scenes. The epilogue gave such a good happy ending, everything seems right in the world. I would love Mad Dog to get a story, he seems like an interesting character. It was great catching up with older characters too. I felt I had to give this one a 5 stars because it had some much emotion. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I’m not scared to admit that while reading book 1, Cracks in the Ice, Eckie was not my favorite character. To understand what I’m meaning, you should probably read it first. But it’s not necessarily a have to, you can read this book without but in my opinion it really would be more enjoyable if you did.
Now that being said, this book cracked my heart wide open. Ryan and Joshua did a fantastic job of bringing out so many emotions.
And I’m so glad Eckie redeemed himself, I grew to love him. I loved the affirmations he said during some of his trying times.
And Jack, oh my gosh. He was such a stand up guy, he was exactly the person Eckie needed in his life and actually he needed Eckie too!!
And don’t let me get started on Levi, he is the most adorable baby and smartest too.
There are so many things that happen in this story that you just need to read it for yourself. The coaches, the players, the parents, Mary who is Levi’s mom, they all have pivotal roles that I’m not giving anything away to the actual storyline. This book deserves way more than 5 stars. I’m totally in love with it. ❤️
The first book really had set up Eckie as the bad guy but we all knew he had a great redemption in him. This book picks up 2 months after Eckie received treatment and we see that he has developed a strong bond with Jack the assistant coach.
I absolutely loved Eckie and Jack they were both such good characters that truly showed their emotions and were clear in their struggles. Eckie's relationship with his parents was awful and was the foundation of all the troubles he experienced in the past.
I don't want to give to much away but I cannot recommend this book enough, it is heartfelt and emotional with the perfect HEA.
This can probably be read as a stand alone, like I did, however, I think that its best to read book one Cracks in the ice, first as it will explain a few things that come to light during the book.
Eckes (21) is hoping to get his hockey scholarship reinstated so he can start his senior year at University. It had been suspended the previous term due to bad behaviour. Jack (23) is the assistant coach on the hockey team and has formed a strong friendship with E over the summer. E's religious parents has said they want nothing to do with him since he came out to them and he is penniless. Jack invites Eckes to move in to his spare room until he gets settled and their attraction grows from there. Eckes also has a baby boy Levi who lives with his soon to be ex wife but is allowed to see him on a regular basis. His role as a young father really added to the story.
Eckes has made a real effort to change his reckless ways and he now has the want/drive to strive to be a better person and the tools to support himself mentally when he falters. I actually enjoyed these mental prompts that came up during the course of the book and thought they were great being that mental health is so important these days.
With a promise to be a better person Eckes scholarship is reinstated and he is allowed to return to the team. I enjoyed watching him strive to be better person, to be a team player, think about his teammates and change his previous ways.
Jack was so patient and caring with Eckes and also has past issues of his own that he struggles with but together they make a great team and are honest and always there for each other.
There were many other things that I loved about the book like the hockey aspect and how we saw a lot of the hockey practices, the games, etc. The camaraderie with the team was great and they were so supportive of Eckes in his time of need. There was a bit of angst with Eckes's parents and other twists and turns in the story but everything gets sorted in the end. I will now read book 1 as I am curious to know Benny and Cole’s story. There is also another series about the NHL Barracudas which is about characters mentioned in the book so my TBR just got bigger!
I really liked Crack in the Ice, but I absolutely LOVED Back to Center. I wasn't sure if I was going to like Eckie's story after the first book, but his growth so was real and so incredible. I loved the mental health representation in this as well as the characters learning how to address it and healthy mechanisms for combating it. The religious-based homophobia was a punch in the gut because of how real it was, but the authors handled it so well. I can't recommend this series enough!
The redemption story is done at its finest. After the events of Cracks in the Ice, I didn't think I would fall in love with Eckie, and wow, was I wrong. The man has experienced enough heartbreak to last a lifetime, and those events led him to getting the help he needed to strive and strive he did. Jack, even when mad with Eckie during his reckless behavior, saw the good in him and helped him to be able to see the good in himself. These two men were made to build each other up and restore each other's faith in love and humanity. Without the other, I can't see either ever being truly happy. It's not often I find the redemption book better than the original, but this one has done it in spades. Please enjoy the journey and know if you ever need help for depression reach out if you are not alone.
Heartwarming - that's what this book was. A heartwarming redemption story.
Back to Center is part of a series and I gathered that the culmination of Eckie's actions that resulted in his stay in hospital occurred in an earlier book. But, enough is explained to read this as a standalone.
This book starts when Eckie is leaving the hospital and having being disowned by his parents, he has no where to go. Enter Jack - one of his coaches - and his new friend, who offers him a place to stay and in doing so, a second chance.
Their relationship takes time to develop but it does so naturally allowing each other the chance to get to know the other better. Jack is supportive and stands by Eckie's side, always. Eckie's son is adorable and seeing the three of them bond was so lovely.
I really enjoyed this book. There's no angst, though some drama. It's packed with love and a strong character development as we see how Eckie becomes someone he is proud to be. And the romance between Jack and Eckie is b-e-a-u-t-i-f-u-l.
“I am not ashamed of my son knowing we’re boyfriends. He’s too young to understand yet, but if he grows up seeing what we have as normal, it’ll never be a big deal. I don’t know what his identity will be, or if he’ll even claim one. But unlike the bullshit I was raised with, I want him to know it’s perfectly okay not to be straight. He needs to know that regardless of anything else.” ~Eckie This book was a bit slow for me to get into. The first 1/4 of the story I was pretty upset with everyone around Eckie. He was trying his best, just got out of the hospital and then Jack put his insecurities and stress on him. Then the way that Benny treated him...sigh. I wanted to shake Benny and point out that he wasn't exactly a picture perfect example of a boyfriend in the last book and he was a complete mess. So it's kind of ironic that he would look down on Eckie when he was worse at one point in his life. Benny and Cole are still on my naughty list at this point. Even though they redeemed themselves. Then when everyone got their head on straight, well that's when the story was awesome, except for Jack and his insecurities, I could have gone without it. I did enjoy the evil family drama and the fact that they got what he deserved. Plus, the relationship between Levi and Eckie was the sweetest. I could gush about them all day!!! I'm really happy that Mary came around, she was put through so much and was still encouraging a relationship between father and son even though she could have just been bitter. Really good book overall though!
“I thought I’d never have this with anyone, but look at us—we’re in love.” I was not sure if Eckie was redeemable atfer the way he was in book 1, Cracks in the Ice. Not only did he redeemed himself, he turned into a favourite. Exile and Jack are just perfect for each other. The way they are able to support each other in their own journey. I loved how mental health and showing of emotions were dealt with in book. The bond and chemistry between Jack and Eckie was great. Levi just added a level of cuteness. I am glad that Eckie got his HEA, because he worked hard to get his mental health to a healthy level.
What a wonderfully well written book of love and redemption from Ryan Taylor and Joshua Harwood. Roland Eckhart, "Eckie", suffers from an extreme form of depression that causes him to act out, but after checking himself into the hospital, and getting the help he needs, he is ready to start his life at college over again. With the help and friendship of assistant hockey coach Jack Rogan, and a lot of hard work, Eckie has a future to look forward to. The attraction and undeniable heat between the two grows stronger the more time they spend together, and adds heat and spice to a book full of emotions. Eckie's adorable baby boy, Levi, is a wonderfully heartfelt addition that will have you smiling along as you read the interactions between the three of them. This story will give you all the feels, and an HEA worth waiting for.
In the first book, we were clearly made to not like him but in book 2 he got his redemption and cleaned himself up. I loved how vulnerable he learned to be and how unapologetic he was. He learned to take responsibility for his actions and I was glad to see him go after his happiness.
I wish we got a bit more background on Eckie's therapy and recovery to get to where he was. I also enjoyed seeing him with his son, and his relationship grow with Jack. Jack was an interesting character and I do wish we got a bit more on his past, but I loved seeing his feelings develop.
This couple had great communication and it was great to see them grow. Eckie had a lot going on, but i loved the way everything was handled.
I wasn’t sure how Eckie was going to redeem himself in this book after his behavior in book 1 Cracks in the Ice. He was on a path of self destruction but finally realizing he needed real mental health help was the biggest step he took. He really did turn his life around and he did it with the help of his coach and friend Jack. Jack gave him the support he needed to keep going with his therapy and the incentive to be a better man. These guys were really adorable, they rotated around one another not sure how to tell each other their true feelings. Once they both took that step I enjoyed their progression in their relationship. I also loved Levi, he was a big reason why Eckie wanted to be a better man. He wanted to be the best father to his son that he could. Unlike his over religious parents that were delusional thinking they could pray the gay away. Sad thing is I know real people like that and it is devastating to see that kind of behavior.
Eckie showed his coaches, teammates and me that he was redeemable. He definitely deserves his HFN.
Back to Center is book 2 in this series. It can definitely be read as a stand alone. The only thing I missed was what Eckie did in book 1 to make everyone dislike him.
Eckie is a hockey player and has been missing from the team as he is in the hospital taking care of himself now and learning how to cope with life. While in the hospital his assistant coach, Jack, was all the support he needed
Jack always felt something more for Eckie and became his friend and a person to count on. They develop a closer friendship and find love which Eckie is making himself physically and mentally better.
This is a sweet story of friends to lovers and support of only your partner but your hockey team of which you let down. This is a low to no angst and has a great HEA
So, this was better than the previous book in the series, but I didn't love it as much as everyone else seems to. It's a sweet romance, super low angst, pretty functional characters, thoughtful treatment of mental illness. But it was a little too instalove for my tastes, because the author just sort of glosses over the entire part of the story where the two characters are building a friendship and relationship; it basically happens before the book even starts. Not awful, but not a book I'll reread.
New to me authors. This is a mm contemporary story set in the USA in the college ice hockey world, main characters are college student Eckie and his team’s assistant coach Jack. Eckie life has been hell with parental issues, a new born son, failing grades, a bad attitude and mental illness. Eckie spent some time in hospital to sort himself out. Jack visits him everyday and a slow budding relationship starts. Some great personal affirmation thought out the book. Baby Levi almost steals the show. Many side characters with their own stories too.
WOW! This is a brilliant story! Eckie went on such a huge emotional journey from when we first met him. He had a beautiful redemption arc after being the villain in Benny and Cole’s love story. After hitting rock bottom in ‘Cracks in the Ice’, Eckhart admits himself to an inpatient mental health hospital for depression. He works hard, there are no shortcuts, no magic “D” once he and Jack get together. He has amends to make, and it’s not always easy for him but he is determined to turn his life around.
Jack was his assistant coach when he was on the university hockey team, and after his own battle with depression when he was in college, Jack is determined not to let Eckie fall through the cracks and visits him everyday. A wonderful friendship forms between the two and once Eckie is discharged, Jack invites Eckie to stay with him and once they’re in the same place their friendship quickly deepens to more.
I absolutely loved that there’s open and healthy dialogue between Eckie and other characters about how he’s doing mentally and the use of antidepressants and how they, combined with ongoing therapy, have helped him. Benny struggled with depression and alcoholism in ‘Cracks in the Ice’ but in ‘Back to Center’, I feel Eckie’s struggles take a bit more centerstage in his journey and I really appreciated that. Jack and Eckie are exactly what the other needed. Truly two pieces of a puzzle. I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.
I absolutely adored this MM hockey romance co-written by Ryan Taylor and Joshua Harwood. It’s a story that deals with mental health struggles, second chances, love, and ultimately: redemption.
We first meet Eckie and Jack in book 1 of the series, “Cracks in the Ice”, another phenomenal story in of itself. Eckie is a college hockey player plagued by undiagnosed mental health issues, which in turn makes him lash out his frustrations to teammates and coaching staff alike. Jack is the assistant coach of the team.
When Eckie gets himself kicked off the team and checks into a facility to get much needed therapy, Jack goes in to check on him and eventually after a few visits, the two become friends. Eckie is grateful for Jack’s friendship, and when he is released from the hospital, Jack invites him to come live with him.
Eckie eventually is given a second chance and is reinstated back on the team to play with his former teammates where he eventually proves that he indeed is now a different person and not that terrible shell of himself he used to be.
I absolutely love Eckie and Jack’s friendship and eventual relationship. They are adorable together, very sweet, and can’t get enough of one another. Their “dirty hula” scenes were off the charts steamy and smokin’ hot!!
Eckie is a young father on the cusp of a divorce, estranged from his parents who do not accept the fact that he is gay and about to leave the hospital he’d checked himself into for 6 weeks to help deal with his depression. He is also hoping for another chance on his school’s hockey team. See, Eckie hurt a lot of people – his soon-to-be ex-wife, his coach, his coach’s boyfriend who he was convinced that he was in love with, his teammates and himself. He wants nothing more than to prove to everyone that he is worthy, healthy and will be on the top of his game.
Rogan is a young assistant coach, protective of his heart after a horrible breakup and crushing hard on the persona non grata of his team, Eckie. What started as one friendly visit to Eckie in the hospital turned into an almost every day occurrence, with their friendship blossoming and becoming something both men come to count on. When he realizes that Eckie has no money, nowhere to go and needs support, he offers the spare room in his apartment.
With Jack’s support, Eckie finds a job, apologizes to Coach Caldwell, is given a second (and FINAL) chance on the team, shows his teammates that he is truly a new person and grows from a good dad to an incredible dad to his son, Levi. The relationship between Eckie and Jack also begins to change into something more, something beautiful and unexpected. But with Jack still protecting his once-shattered heart, Eckie’s desire to not screw up what he knows will be the last relationship he will ever be in. Eckie knows Jack Rogan is his one, his soulmate and the other half of his heart.
Will Jack be able to fully open his heart to Eckie & Levi, being a second father and enjoying the true love of his life? What happens when Eckie’s hateful family tries to rip away Eckie’s new happiness? Will he be strong enough to withstand everything that’s thrown at him or will he revert to the Eckie we first met?
