Rate this book
Considered to be one of the best electricity books on the market, the authors have provided a clear understanding of how electricity is produced, measured, controlled and used. A minimum of mathematics is used for direct explanations of primary cells, magnetism, Ohm's Law, capacitance, transformers, DC generators, and AC motors. This is the book that made me an Electrical Engineer. Began reading it when I was 16. Good analogies. Easy to understand. Introduces the fascinating world of electricity and electronics!

Before I decided to formally study electricity and electronics, I was introduced to Basic Electricity at a recording session at Earhammer in Oakland. Greg's got lots of great books to thumb through while you sit and listen to mixes and this was one of them. Unaware I would soon be back in school, I picked up a copy and dug in.

Developed in the early 50's as a series of training manuals for the U. S. Navy, Basic Electricity is a sound, logical, well done romp through the glorious realms of electricity. In other words, it's a great text book. From electron theory to ac generators and motors, the book takes you step by step to a thorough understanding of electricity.

The downside is that, in spite of this copy being the 2007 revision, the information in this book has not been updated in some time. My basic electricity professor said he had contacted the publisher, expressing interest in using the book if an update was done and they said they weren't willing to do it. If this book were updated to include technology to the current era, it would be the perfect textbook for basic electricity courses at the high school or university level.

Also would have loved to have seen more "answers in the back of the book." Outside of the classroom, you don't know if you're doing a problem correctly without being provided the answers.

I love the plentiful illustrations included throughout. Sure, they provide a visual representation of the information you are trying to learn, but they're in that killer 50's military style. They help but they also just look real swell!

I used this as a supplemental resource in my basic electricity class and it was extremely helpful. Having started the book well before starting the semester, I had a fair amount of familiarity with the material going in, which was extremely helpful. Whether you're a current student, a professional or a hobbyist, you can't go wrong with this book.
