Insomnia sucks! Sometimes, nothing short of sleeping pills can help, but then you have side effects to deal with. Sondra Kornblatt came up with an approach that will help you live with insomnia and not hate it. You can rest even if you can't sleep. She explains how to diminish the hold of the restless mind and reconnect with the body in a way that is soothing and beneficial. Some of the techniques are new age and some are strongly backed by science. I say, it's worth a try if it could help. The book is not long, and the chapters are bite-sized.

Very easy book to read. I really don't think I learned anything new. Most of the points had been made before but I did really enjoy the section on night yoga. That was a nice addition to ways to relax the body prior to sleep (or attempts at sleep).

No silver bullets or big surprises here, but a somewhat helpful set of tools (meditation, visualization etc.) to help you relax and let go of your anxiety about your insomnia, if not the actual insomnia itself. Very easy to read in the middle of the night.

Less of a real method and more of a miscellaneous collection of measures that might help when you have insomnia, from more or less scientific to new age. The unique selling point is basically that you shouldn't expect to be able to actually sleep at the end but rather rest and use the me time. Bonus point for telling people to go to the doctor if there is evidence for serious illnesses.

Good information, just pretty boring and hard to get into. But obviously it's a "self-help" book, so it can't be expected to be entertaining.

I am giving this book two stars because it is a very good summary of things that have been said in many other books. That said, the book is disappointing. There is nothing new in this book other than the author 'reframing' the techniques as a way to come to acceptance with your insomnia rather than using the techniques (the exact same ones in many other books) to actually help you fall asleep. And the first two or three chapters of this are horribly confusing and jump all over the place. But I will give it two stars because if you have never read any books about dealing with insomnia, this gives a great overview of techniques and ideas.

It was too new age-ish. You cannot just embrace insomnia as a friend, as something that the universe has given you to 'learn' something about yourself. It neither had any scientific explanations, nor did it have any useful practical advice. Yoga pose descriptions without any pictures is a bad idea. Very hard to follow. The author also uses really bad analogies that made me constantly roll my eyes!

a lot of the techniques were ones that i was already familiar with from sport psychology & meditation training - just applied differently to treating / dealing w/ insomnia. some of it was flat out hokey and were things i'd never try. i don't think it's a book that i'll read again.

A little touchy-feely, but I'm willing to read anything to learn more. Not sure how much I'd use these techniques, but there were some good points in here. Might revisit at a later date. I also learned that a lot of my instincts are correct.
