I am the biggest fan of everything and anything to do with KitchenAid stand mixers. About 7 years ago, after having waited for over a decade, I purchased one and haven’t regretted it since. What I love about my mixer is the fact that I can purchase additional attachments like a grain grinder, veggie juicer/strainer, and etc. For a few years now, I have been eyeing up the KitchenAid ice cream attachment, and I finally purchased it about a week ago. I’ve made ice cream before in a different machine nearly 20 years ago, but as I wanted to try some up-t0-date recipes using my new attachment, I ordered this book through the library. I’m glad I did!

I’ve noticed that the ratings for previous reviews of this book hover around 3 stars. I personally made two recipes from this book: Vanilla Bean Ice Cream and Espresso Ice Cream. I’ll admit that I was a bit uneasy about it, especially since they both contain 1/4 teaspoon of salt. But let me tell you: Kaldunski made sure her recipes were good before she had this book published!

When I made ice cream previously, I added the egg yolks directly into the pan. But Kaldunski’s recipes constantly remind readers to temper the eggs **before** adding them to the milk. I did, and my ice cream was luscious! The author also made sure to educate readers about the differences between ice cream, gelato, frozen yogurt, sherbets, and sorbets. I really enjoyed this book and love both the recipes that I tried and fully intend to try additional ones, especially the Key Lime Sherbet, the Chocolate-Flecked Fresh Mint Ice Cream, and the Vanilla Frozen Yogurt.

Overall, this is a cook book that is well worth a spot on any kitchen shelf, and particularly if that kitchen has a KitchenAid ice cream attachment or some other ice cream maker. The book doesn’t delve in to what to do if you **don’t** have an ice cream machine, though. So, if you lack this equipment, you might find a different book more desirable.

I have been looking for a simple, slim, colourful ice cream recipe book that explains just the basics around this excellent dessert. "Sweet Scoops" completely met my criteria. It's only flaw, thus far, is the lack of photos on each and every page (it goes 2 photos, 2 recipes without photos, 2 photos, 2 recipes without photos...).
