"Alone at last. I'll bet I know what you're thinking - you're hoping we've reached the romantic interlude in our little drama." -- Black Mask, the deranged villain

"No, I'm hoping that when I vomit, I get most of it on you." -- Barbara 'Oracle' Gordon, the heroine coolly keeping her wits while trapped with the psycho

The War Games series satisfactorily concludes with this volume . . . and it sort of falls prey to the (sometimes disputed) axiom that the third part of a trilogy is the weakest. While I like a good Batman story-line, and I have no issue with an epic or saga-like crime narrative, I also had to wonder if an editorial tightening up to just two books would've been more effective. (To cop a succinct opinion from another GR reviewer, "This started off amazing and was just okay by the time it ended.") Still, this volume features various scenes of Batman and his assembled proteges kicking ass and saving the day during the seemingly never-ending gang war in Gotham City, and even Spoiler gets to administer some rough justice to the creep who nearly tortured her to death in the prior installment.

In this conclusion Batman has to save Gotham from complete chaos. There's a lot about the other Bat Family members in this one and even with the conclusion there are other problems that will arise in later graphic novels.

OVERALL GRADE: B to B plus.

This whole War game story was brilliant , with a lot of it feeling realistic and the story really dealing with many dark tales, including tortures , gang wars and so many deaths . In the end the story puts the question out for the readers to decipher , whether they consider the actions of the Caped vigilantes heroic, or consider them the cause of the destruction.

I as a reader thoroughly enjoyed the whole saga , with the portrayal of Black Mask really well put , so much so that it does feel that he was a character better than Joker and two face . The only complain i held for the storyline was the way the story finished , it felt out of pace and jarring , with abrupt and somewhat anti climatic ending . Overall it was one of the best written bat stories , if not one fine dark gruesome comic book

Act 3 is a satisfying ending to War Games, it’s an explosive and shocking finale that ties up the arc nicely.

This was absolutely a-ma-zing!
The thrills this book gave me..
For me the Black Mask was one hell of a villian.. The way he took over the orchestrated actions and bent it to his will.. Very nice move.
The heroes had a hard time, seen almost as bad guys themselves..
At a couple of moments I was actually thinking this was going to be the downfall of The Bat and his team.. But of course, who can stop the Bat for real, right? ;)
I have to say I got tears in my eyes at the end.. That sure was a difficult moment right there.
Oh, and that last panel... well, think we've got a lot to look forward too, right?!
And of course, yet again, the artwork was perfect! Dark, gritty,.. just the way I like it!
So allround numbers: 5/5/5 for story/characters/artwork

This series started off amazing and was just okay by the time it ended. The second volume lost most of my interest in this series. It happens a lot in Batman comics where Batman refuses the help from the rest of the Batfamily and wants to finish things on his own and this is another case of that happening here. I feel this trope is mostly a cop out with the authors just not knowing how to involve the rest of the family in the final showdown. Batman is always pretty gruff with his family during major events but in this series he just comes off as a huge asshole and committed actions I think would have pushed some of his allies to the breaking point. Overall in this series it just felt like a lot of out of character actions were committed by Batman.

The Batman: War Games series finishes in Act 3: Endgame. It is intense, emotional and suspenseful. The action that is depicted is incredible and the story line is finished in a way that doesn't completely satisfy you, it makes you want more. I really enjoyed reading this series and the conclusion of it makes me sad and yet curious as to what will happen next. I will be highly anticipating the future before reading the sequel, Batman: War Crimes. Overall, just another interesting and wonderful Batman comic that makes you love/hate the main character and his actions (but love always wins).

War Games is a major storyline comic book story arc published by DC Comics that ran in its Batman family of titles. The plot revolves around a gang war involving all the major criminal groups in Gotham. It starts with one of Batman's most ambitious contingency plans for a possible outbreak of uncontrollable gang violence.

Batman: War Games, Act Three: Endgame collects: Detective Comics #799, Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight #184, Nightwing #98, Batman: Gotham Knights #58, Robin #131, Batgirl #57, Catwoman #36, and Batman #633.

This trade paperback concludes the story of the battle facing Batman and his allies in the face of gang reprisals following the death of many of the city's key underworld leaders. It takes a drastic toll as Stephanie Brown as Spoiler, formerly Robin, dies from the reprisal.

Bill Willingham, A.J. Lieberman, Dylan Horrocks, and Ed Brubaker are credited for writing the series and for the most part, I rather enjoyed the narrative. Some issues were better than others were, but overall it was somewhat well planned and written. It had a rather tragic conclusion of Stephanie Brown dying, which was handled somewhat well.

Tom Derenick, Al Barrionuevo, Mike Huddleston, Paul Gulacy, and Kinsun Loh are the pencilers for the series. With so many pencilers, it is rather difficult to grade the overall artistic flow. For the most part this hodgepodge of pencilers has similar styles with few exceptions and that the flow of the artistic style flowed rather smoothly with a few sudden jerks.

Overall, Batman: War Games was a rather well planned out event. However, I was not all too thrilled with the red herring of making Stephanie Brown a Robin, just to get her fired and murdered – she deserved better. Her tenure should have been better being the first female Robin in the main continuity.

All in all, Batman: War Games, Act 3: Endgame is a rather good conclusion to an event that was done rather nicely.

Volume 3 was a bit easier to get through than the previous two and had much more focused plotting. No major complaints here but there were also no real stand out moments. I like that everyone has gone in their own direction and the police are hostile to vigilantes again after this event, it almost feels like a minor reset that is actually justified by the events of the comic.

I’m a Batgirls fan and it’s important context in their stories, so I had to read the infamous “Stephanie Brown gets tortured to death with power tools” story.

Honestly, not bad! I was expecting it to be less enjoyable and more misogynistic, so I was pleasantly surprised with a pretty good Batman event.

Stephanie Brown gets fired from her brief stint as Robin and kinda accidentally starts a citywide gang war that gets hundreds of people killed. The whole Batfam has to run around putting out fires. It ends with a Batman back to basics, a dark avenging angel hated by the cops and the public, on his own in Gotham. 🙄

Maybe I need to give Batman a little break. I just couldn't get invested in this and it took me way too long to read 8 modern comics. It felt like it wanted to end too quickly and I bet it was tough to bring that many creative teams together to tell a cohesive story. 24 issues for something like this was just too long. Yeah, I know. I said it felt rushed and it was too long. It just somehow was both.

There's a lot in this book that didn't interest me. I really only liked the last issue, and then it was over. This whole series seemed to be leading up to a big culmination, and it fell flat for me. The artwork varies.

Orpheus, the vigilante hero that Batman handpicked to be his proxy in a war game scenario to control the gangs of Gotham, has been murdered. Without him, Batman's mission to restore order to his city, just got even more harder to accomplish. It's even more taxing as a long thought dead enemy of the Dark Knight has knows of Batman's plans and is impersonating Orpheus in order to put Gotham under their control Adding to the problem, the new Police Commissioner just ordered the GCPD to shoot any and all citizens of the city wearing a mask with extreme prejudice.
Batman: War Games comes to an explosive end. It's refreshing to have such a massive scale Batman story to NOT involve the Joker. The artwork chapters involving Catwoman and Batgirl continues to look ridiculous. But the overall story is top notch and is one of the best I've read this side of No Man's Land.

I read all three volumes of this hulk in one day, which attests to it being a quick read, but mostly to it being a compelling read. I was up until 2:00 AM blowing through the third volume, where the mystery antagonist being outed and becoming visibly active kicks the story up that last notch, especially since he/she is a totally different kind of quirky villain in that darkly understated way. It’s slow to start and has a poor sense of the city really being in chaos since the story is told almost entirely with various police and costumed heroes responding to specific emergencies, but Gotham enflamed in gang war creates a really exciting story as it goes on. Most of the notable Gothamites bring backstory that’s readily understandable and sympathetic: Nightwing is haunted by his complicitness in a murder, Spoiler is trying to prove herself after being ‘fired’ from the position of Robin (and in doing so mistakenly sparks the gang war), the huge gang war plot is something Batman actually devised but never intended to implement, the new commissioner keeps coming in on the wrong end of situations and can’t trust these heroes, and the real Robin struggles with staying out of the business when the city needs every hand it can get. The gang warfare has just enough structure to satisfy while being too chaotic for anyone to pre-empt or stop, leaving the story to define the characters rather than the normal pedantic tales where Batman or one of his arch-villain plans everything. There aren’t so many colorful classic baddies like Poison Ivy or Joker, in place of gang leaders and the few white collar criminals, like Penguin (who makes a killing supplying ammunition) and Deadshot (hired as a bodyguard).

The only substantial weaknesses are a few really unnecessary characters making some really unnecessary appearances (Hush shows up three times just to remind us how tough he is), and that since this story crossed multiple comics the compilation has a different artist for every chapter. These artists aren’t doing anything daring, instead being just similar enough for the changes in body types, facial structures and sometimes what clothing people are wearing to be jarring. It’s got to be some testament to the overall editing and direction of the story that I could bop across every differently drawn chapter so quickly, though.

Holy CRAP that was intense. I screamed at various members of my family to stop talking to me when they came into my room during the reading of the final 2 volumes.

I don't even know how to review this other than: READ IT. Is it perfect? No. Is it the BEST writing? No. Are there some parts I skipped over because it was like "ENOUGH ALREADY, I GET IT, THE NEWS THINKS BATMAN IS EVIL"? HELL yes. However, was this one of the most intense and suspenseful series I have read in a very, very, very, very, very long time? Oooooooh boy, yes.

If nothing else, the suspense factor was ramped up to an 11. It was all out ANARCHY. I think my body was releasing adrenaline at some point during the second half of this. The ending was alright, but it left a LOT left unsaid (and not in a cool ambiguous way, in a "Um, hi... it's me, the reader. Did you forget about the other 3 storylines you forgot to write the ending to?" kinda way.) It kinda felt like they had gotten Gotham into such a bad spot that they didn't completely know how to get them back into a fully good spot. It DID, however, leave the chance for more added to this series. So here's hoping. One other thing for those of you who've finished this, and knows the ENTIRE life of Spoiler AKA Stephanie;

Okay. So overall, not a complete masterpiece, but if you want something that'll get your heart racing, this is it.
