Very rare is the history of US state reflect as much of what is wrong with it as does this book from 1977. Virgina Van der Veer Hamilton's "Alabama: A History" does not shy away from the dark history particularly toward the African American population. The story though of Alabama in general is a bit of a unique one amongst the 50 stories of the US from how it was initially settled and those challenges to various obstacles over time that were at times tied into just how unique the people are. It's also interesting to realize from this reader's perspective the history of the state around the Civil War and also the story of Mobile as well. Overall parts of this book will not surprise a lot of people since Alabama at times continues to have the reputation that this book tends to give to her. It though is my hope to at some point down the line read a more recent history to see exactly what's happened in the last nearly 50 years.
