A beautifully written and stunningly evocative debut novel, Dominic follows the title character's adventures through the collapse of the ancient Roman Empire, depicting a society rife with reckless abandon and chaos, a world of display and caprice. Left to fend for himself, his travels bring him into contact with many colorful personalities, such as a caravanof gypsies and the inmates of a dungeon. His adventures eventually land him in the company of a friend, the gigantic Danish bard Kevin Dunskaldir, who helps him defeat an evil as sinister as any force threatening the empire. Creating two unique heroes, acting against the mighty backdrop of a society in transition, Robinson successfully brings together all the elements of a literary masterpiece in this classic tale of friendship, fate and adversity. A really magnificent book. I wrote the author after I read it and she wrote back in her own hand! I read this years ago. It is about a dwarf and all of his travails as a slave and as a circus act. (Time period 1300's 1400's I think) It was a very uplifting book. I don't know if the author wrote some other books but this one really stands out.

Wow, was this really really good. I bought it for $1 and it's been sitting on my shelf for a year or so - I really should've read it sooner. As it was, I stayed up all night reading it and now I'm pretty tired. Anyone feeling badly about their life should read it for sure. It teaches you that no matter how awful you think your life is, it could be worse. You could be a little person living in the Roman empire circa 400 AD. Yikes, did that ever suck.

Wow A captivating story on every page

I liked the Character so much even as my heart anguished at the way he was considered. Watching love come through the unexpected channels; while betrayal tries to dissuade the heart of forgiveness and love.
The evil in power is felt and hated and the power of god shines.

I truly enjoyed this book. Dominic is an interesting and very likeable character. The story is joyous at times and heartbreaking as well. It provides a wonderful view of life and politics in a time most of us have studied very little. The descriptions are lovely and I highly recommend

The books strong point is about torture. Nasty but very well done. The other strong point is about how confusing the transition of religions was to the hinterlands of the ancient Roman empire. First old-style pagan (I'm thinking Mother Goddess), then official Roman, then Christian.
