Chapter 30-40

Omg this was sooo good!!

Lots of really cool character moments with Xin, Zheng, and Bi. It seems like Xin is going through some character development and maturing and I’m very excited to see where that leads.

I absolutely love how the action/fight scenes are drawn. There can be so much going on, but you can look throughout the panel and see what each individual character is doing. In 1-on-1 duels, you can really feel the weight of each sword swing.

I’m so ready to see what the fate of Cheng Jiao is. Definitely going to pick up on volume 5 tomorrow and then I believe I’ll be caught up on the English translations of Kingdom!

For being a Shonen series and relying on a lot of tropes of the genre, the art and the breakneck pace are awesome inspiring. Throw in the design of the mountain people as well as just a majority of the characters. They all have a spark and feel so different to me. I have not been this wowed by a series in a while and I understand why it has found such prolonged success.

The battle has begun. I like Hara's portrayal of unwavering resolve to fulfill one's ambitions.
Along with volume 3, this is one of the most motivational books in the series so far.

Its a good series and I can see it growing more, but for me at this stage this is too long of a series to continue, and not enough to make me want to keep going as it deals with a lot of standard shounen characters.

If I had to sum up this volume with a sentence, it would be "underestimate the mountain people at your own peril." A volume that is all about battle, perseverance, and the impressive artwork depicting the decisive blows. Absolutely great stuff.

Stellar action and the characters have sat with me for long enough that I now get properly hyped when action set pieces reach their climax

Finally a volume I could actually get into! Shin starts doing things this volume, his fight against Saiji was nice and he got some good dialogue about 'good vs evil' and the royal nobility versus him being some poor peasant/slave/nobody. Bajio is cool, too, reminds me a bit of Bleach's Kenpachi with being some wild monster of a kid- I'm interested in seeing more of him compared to the other side characters we've seen so far. Really, the mountain people are a lot more interesting to me than the rest of Ei Sei's supporters. They have a cooler visual design, badass leader lady, and they be hit things very hard wow.

'It doesn't matter whether you are a man or a woman, as long as you are the strongest, then she is our leader, through and through!' Well said, man, well said!
