The Essential Edwards Collection: Set of Five Books

Rate this book

Jonathan Edwards was a colonial, philosophical preacher and theologian.  To many he stands as the preeminent theologian and thinker of the American tradition.  This series of five books covers Edwards' life and major writings opening an accessible window into the heart and mind of the man credited for starting the First Great Awakening.

By way of introduction, presentation and reflection the authors unearth the choicest treasures of Edwards' writings for lay people to discover.  Eminently readable and understandable, The Essential Edwards Collection proves you do not need to be a scholar to enjoy and benefit from the writings and life of Jonathan Edwards.

This set includes all 5 books of The Essential Edwards Collection:  Jonathan Edwards Lover of God, Jonathan Edwards On Beauty, Jonathan Edwards On Heaven and Hell, Jonathan Edwards On the Good Life, and Jonathan Edwards on True Christianity

It is really quite impossible to summarize and review 5 books. Perhaps the best thing to say is that this is a wonderful introduction to his writings, sermons and the man himself. If you've wanted to read Edwards and didn't know where to begin or you've tried and struggled through trying to read him, this is a wonderful place to begin. Not only do you get a great overview but you can find plenty of places to jump into reading more directly if you choose. In addition, Strachan and Sweeney have helped to make this wonderfully devotional and thought provoking by adding sections for modern application.

With that, here are a few quotes though there could be pages more:

"heaven is primarily about God, and worship of Him."

"IN THE CREATURE’S KNOWING, esteeming, loving, rejoicing in, and praising God, the glory of God is both exhibited and acknowledged; his fullness is received and returned. Here is both an emanation and remanation. The refulgence shines upon and into the creature, and is reflected back to the luminary. The beams of glory come from God, and are something of God, and are refunded back again to their original. So that the whole is of God, and to God; and God is the beginning, middle and end in this affair. (Works 8, 531)"

"WHAT A VAST and uncontrollable dominion hath the almighty God. The kings of the earth are not worthy of the name, for they are not able to execute their authority in their narrow bounds, except by the power and assistance of their subjects, but God rules most absolutely the whole universe by himself; kings rule, perhaps sometimes for forty years, but God’s kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and of his dominion there is no end. Well, therefore, may he be said to be the blessed and only potentate, King of Kings, and Lord of Lords. (Works 10, 422)"

"GOD’S LOVE TO HIMSELF, and his own attributes, will therefore make him delight in that which is the use, end and operation of these attributes. If one highly esteem and delight in the virtues of a friend, as wisdom, justice, etc., that have relation to action, this will make him delight in the exercise and genuine effects of these virtues: so if God both esteem and delight in his own perfections and virtues, he can’t but value and delight in the expressions and genuine effects of them. So that in delighting in the expressions of his perfections, he manifests a delight in his own perfections themselves: or in other words, he manifests a delight in himself; and in making these expressions of his own perfections his end, he makes himself his end. (Works 8, 437)"

I really like these for what they were. Great summaries on Jonathan Edwards for those who don't want to translate real Edwards. Or like me just have a hard time with that.
