Re The Golden Greek - Sally Wentworth takes one of her occasional forays into child custody disputes with this one.

The h is 19 and an archaeology student in Greece where she meets up with an old college chum and has a whirlwind love affair. Unfortunately said old chum is the scion of an overbearing Greek Tycoon and when the h turns up preggers, the aforementioned Tycoon Nematode sends his 'message boy' lawyer over to pay the h off to have an abortion.

Well this h, in classic SW style, is not a push around or pay off kind of girl. She tosses some hot coffee on the slimy sewer crawling lawyer and tells him to take a running jump. She will have her baby and the old chum lover AND his Nematode Tycoon daddy can go hang for all she cares.

The h then has to endure the beratement of her parents and her family's manipulative attempts to give her baby to the favored older sister and her husband. Initially the h agrees to let them adopt her child and she will be able to finish her degree. But as she narrowly misses her final exams due to child birth and then proceeds to fall head over heels in love with her son, she decides to keep her baby herself.

We have a reentry of the Slime Crawler Errand Boy Lawyer - who really seems to be a nice person doing an uncomfortable job. This time he wants the h to sign off on an agreement that she will never seek any kind of support from the old chum ex-lover or make any claims on the Nematode Tycoon grandfather. The h is disgusted, but agrees and then Slime Crawler asks the h out for a date, as he thinks that the h's sister is going to adopt the child and the h doesn't tell him otherwise.

Needless to say the h just gives him the blank stare deadpan resting witch face and turns down the dinner offer. Then the h's family have major hysterical conniptions that their tarty black sheep daughter is refusing to obey their demands and sacrifice her child to the favored daughter. They throw the h out.

The h has to take a series of housekeeping/nanny live in jobs as for some reason she couldn't resit her final exams and get her degree. Thus five years on, the h is doing her best to keep on keeping on and reads in the newspaper that her former lover and the father of her child has been killed in a skiing accident. The h is sad that he is dead, but she got over him a long time ago and while her son knows that his dad lives in Greece and had to go away, the h isn't sure how to tell him that his father is dead or even if it really matters.

The h does teach both herself and her son Greek and she does give her son a sense of his Greek heritage but the h doesn't plan to return to Greece for anything but visits in the far future, unless she can pass her exams and restart her career ambitions.

Then Nematode Tycoon and Slime Crawler Message Boy reenter the h's life. Because of course now that NT's heir apparent is dead, he has every intention of swooping in and scooping up the last living bit of his legacy - NT has an empire to leave and since his son is dead and all the other tarty ladies he impregnated had terminations and the official arranged marriage wife of eight months failed in her reproductive duty, he wants the h's son.

The h flat out tells him and his errand boy NO, not now, not tomorrow and not ever. Tho being a parent herself, she understands the devastation the death of a child can bring and she feels for NT's loss. It is that compassion and the bland persuasion of Errand Boy that eventually softens the h up enough to relent and agree to visit NT on his private island.

So Errand Boy, the h and the son all go off to Greece and this is where the story starts to drag. The h knows that NT has ulterior motives, so she tells her son to pretend he can't speak Greek and she hides her proficiency in the language too.

We meet the ex lover's widow, whom NT believes should stick around and raise the h's son - after he either runs the h off or pays her off to get control of his future heir. The h and widow start out a bit antagonistically, until the h makes it clear that she and her son are a pair and there will be NO OW raising her child - ever.

Then we get some h and OW rivalry when the h believes that the widow is on the make for Errand Boy - the h gets stuck with some tepid lurve mojo vibes for him herself. Nematode Tycoon is determined to undermine the h via buying her clothes and gifts and trying to make her dependent on his largess.

For some reason, Errand Boy - who is now revealed as the H - seems determined to make the h accept this and tries to encourage the h to start to financially depend on NT. (It was awkward, cause on one hand he is reminding her of her rights and Nematode's lack of the same and on the other he is telling her to suck up to Nematode. It made no sense, cause this h had no problems putting Nematode Tycoon in his place and no hesitation in taking him on and winning.)

After some tourism and some h pining for Errand Boy while he goes off on a trip, it is revealed that the ex lover's widow is in love with the Captain of NT's yacht and since she is done with her marriage and done with NT's family, she will wait out her year of mourning and marry her Captain lover. This leaves the h and Errand Boy free to lurve it up in the gardens and Errand Boy proposes and the h accepts.

Then the big revelation comes that Errand Boy is the Nematode Tycoon's younger illegitimate brother. NT's father cheated on his wife with the H's mother and when his wife finally died, he brought Errand Boy to live on the island alongside Nematode Tycoon and the resentment and hostility is fierce.

After a big argument between Errand Boy and Nematode Tycoon, we find out that if Nematode Tycoon has no hereditary heir, Errand Boy gets the whole lot of everything and it is a very good reason for him to woo and marry the h. Through her son Troy, Errand Boy gets the family fortune either way and he deliberately taunts Nematode Tycoon with that knowledge. (No one stops to think that Nematode Tycoon is not horribly old and could still father children of course.)

Anyhows, the h reveals her extensive knowledge of Greek and she rains verbal bolts of fire on both Errand Boy's and Nematode's heads. Then she grabs her son and her suitcase and heads off to catch the ferry home. Errand Boy and Nematode take turns punching each other and then Errand Boy chases after the h and claims that he really does love her, he just wanted to irk his half brother in repayment for years of cruelty.

The h thinks about things as she waits for the ferry to take her off island, asks her son what he thinks and her son likes the H. So the h decides to go back to Errand Boy and he was patiently waiting on the road back to Nematode's villa for the h to decide she loves him for the big HEA.

This one was a really great first half and a really lukewarm second half. I think SW was writing a romance, but it was one about a mother's love for her child and Errand Boy just got drafted as a secondary stand in as we are in HPlandia.

So if you pick this one up, be prepared for an h that really shines in her determination to be a good mum, a villainous grandfather nemesis that makes a lot of OW look tame, and an afterthought Errand Boy H that is really only there for some filler and to give the story a nominal romance HEA.

The Golden Greek by Sally Wentworth presents us with one of the greatest heroines in HPlandia in my humble opinion but pairs her up with a pretty bland hero for an okay HEA.

The heroine is a young, intelligent, student of archeology who looks up a vague, Greek university friend while on a dig in Greece. A holiday fling ensues. Heroine thinks she is in luuuurve so it is rather a shock when her shady Greek boyfriend tells her to get an abortion and gives her the boot upon learning she is pregnant. Apparently, he is an International Playboy who has gotten plenty of girls "in trouble" across the globe, encouraged by his horror of a chauvinist father, but was able to pay off previous flings and get them to abort.

The heroine is having none of it. She tells the "messenger boy" hero, lawyer to the Greek tycoon, who has come to pay her off, to go to hell. I really loved how she set him down and he had nothing to say in his defense.

If it wasn't enough that her boyfriend turned out to be a spineless twit, her own family disowns her when she refuses to hand over the baby to her childless brother and sister-in-law. They were just so horrible and NEVER got a comeuppance in the entire story, for which I took one whole star off the rating because I can't stand it when villains get away with their dastardly deeds. It's enough that they do in real life. In my escapist fiction, I need to see them grovel and suffer!

The heroine was really great because with everything that happened to her, it would have been easy to turn her into an insufferable martyr Mary Sue but the author didn't. I related to her as a human being. She had pride without being holier than thou. She was a fierce mama bear without being a creepy, clinging mother. She was stubborn but also knew when to bend so as not to break.

I just didn't like her pairing with the hero, the family lawyer who basically is sent to clean up all of the family's dirty laundry and who has carried a torch for her ever since she threw stinging hot coffee on his smug face. She, and her darling plot moppet of a son, deserved a more inspiring hero.

Overall a satisfying read if only for the pleasure of reading about a heroine with a spine of steel who does not mince words when it comes to taking her nemesis down a peg or two.

"The Golden Greek" is the story of Laurel and Ross.

Woah. This was weird and interesting.

The book begins with the young heroine going on a expedition as an archaeology student, and meeting a young man there. She falls madly in love, has wild sex, and ends up pregnant. Suddenly, the man who comes from a rich Greek family wants her to have an abortion, and the heroine vehemently refuses. She then agrees to give up her child to her brother and his wife, but falls in love with the baby and decides to raise him herself. She is sort of disowned by her family, and the lawyer from the Greek family makes her sign a paper, absolving her of all claims to their wealth.
The story then moves four years later. The heroine is now a hard working mother, raising her young son by doing odd jobs for the family. The lawyer, aka the hero traces her down, explaining the dbag man has died and now his rich father wants his only grandson. The heroine is mighty pissed, and fights them off like a lioness, until they somehow make her give in with the talks of her son not knowing his rich Greek heritage. Anyways, the rest of the story has bits and pieces of her emerging romance with the lawyer, her fight with the ex's father, jealousy and eventual friendship with ex's wife, loads of drama and an abrupt ending.

It was intriguing but the love story was barely developed and the plot was very patchy. Many ideas were introduced but never read fruition. Her family sucked, her romance made no sense and the big reveal was underwhelming.

This book started so well and would have been rated higher if it didn't fall flat mid way it lost the intensity and the ending be abrupt lost star. I really liked Ross and Laurel their romance was not central to the story more like 20% which is strange but I enjoyed reading it but more if it didn't end abruptly, felt little incomplete...

I liked this book, a bit different from the usual.

Laurel as a young grad student of classical Greece is in Delphi on a dig when she hurts her wrist. This puts her out of commission, so she is unable to do her work or help out. Since she is in Greece she decides to call on an old classmate Niko, who had offered to show her around if she is ever in town. She and Niko have a good time together and soon they fall in love and become lovers, but Niko convinces her to go back to England to finish her degree. She knows Niko has a domineering father who controls him. Soon after she finds out she is pregnant and calls Niko. He comes rushing over, but tries to convince her to have and abortion. He seems to be afraid that his dad would disown him. Lauren refuses and convinces him to leave his family and stay with her even if they will have a hard time of it.

Niko leaves to arrange his affairs but he never comes back. Instead the family lawyer Ross is dispatched to buy her off. Lauren is devastated and sobs heartbreakingly when she realizes that it is over between her and Niko. She refuses any help from them. When she goes to her family, her father in only concerned that she complete her degree. He wants her to give the baby up for adoption. They agree that her older married brother and his wife will adopt the child since they are childless.

The Lawyer, Ross Ashton, returns with some papers for her to sign. He seems concerned over her and she tells him she will have the child adopted by her brother. He makes her sign papers relinquishing claims to Niko. When she gives birth she realizes that she cannot give up her baby, but when she tells her parents and her brother they are very mad at her and cut her out. The Lawyer, Ross goes to visit her at the hospital but she continues letting him think she will give the baby to her brother. He tries to ask her out when she is better, but she refuses him and tells him she just wants to forget everything and everyone connected to Niko and asks that he leave her alone.

5 years later, Ross finds her again. She is working as a housekeeper/Nanny so she can her son can live together. He tells her Niko died and his father is now desperate to find her son, since he is the only grandson. She continues to refuse but Niko's father arrives and convinces her to just have a holiday with them so he can get to know his grandson. She relents and goes off to Greece with her son. It is there that she develops feelings for Ross and he seems to be just as attracted to her. Her son is also developing a relationship with his grandfather. Niko had gotten married a year before he died, so we get to see the widow who acts like a jealous OW at first but she eventually turns out to be a decent person and they become friends. There is a bit of a mystery, she finds out that Ross is actually an illegitimate son of Niko's grandfather, so he is Niko's uncle and half-brother to the dad. But the half brothers have a bit of a contentious relationship. Ross and Laurel fall in love and Ross wants to adopt her son but Laurel hears Ross and Niko's dad fight and she thinks Ross is just using her to thwart Niko's dad of his grandson. All is cleared up in the end and there is an abrupt HEA. It could have used a couple of pages more.

Throughout the story one gets the impression that Ross has been attracted to and concerned for Laurel from the start. Unusual in an era with heroes who are jerks, Ross is actually a decent guy.

What the dickens? There is NO romance in this book, and that its considered as such is an insult to the readers. This is pretty much a solo character book, the heroine...listen she be dumb at the beginning. Ditches an internship/job(?) for a man, gets pregnant(not solely her fault but she had a hand in it), promises to give the child to her brother and his wife(who are struggling to have a child)....then renege's on said promises and keeps the baby, doesn't finish her degree which could lead to better work/jobs and kinda treats her employers disrespectfully...girl you and your son live there, chill. And WOW she hurt her family! Like SO MUCH. The book IGNORES this and she doesn't make amends or fix the huge rift or even get the poor couple that were baby snatched a kid. Our 'hero'...uh he nuts, and he is just out doing this evil family's business, seemingly for free!!! Hours(?) after giving birth, he asks out the heroine....sir, she got dumped by proxy by YOU on the behalf of the baby's father/grandfather...now is NOT the time. 'I fell in love with you...' sorry when did that happen? Cause WE didn't see it! He is just bad as his spoiler alert brother...just trash. The book's ending is so silly and the heroine is reverting back to her stupidity in the beginning but being with this dude and being near this trash family. I mean if you don't mind no romance, abrupt endings, and not alot of pay off...read this. Otherwise skip.

2.5 stars rounded up because this MFC has spirit and fights ferociously for her son. (Granted, she had a few weak moments like when she gave in far too easily to the MMC's demands that she wear the clothes and underwear he'd picked for her; I would've shredded them, personally.) MMC was thankfully not another typical alpha ass, although he dug his own grave by not being upfront about his identity. Stars deducted for the abrupt and unromantic ending, the pacing problems, and the rather lacklustre romance between the leads.
