Leonard Mlodinow is an American theoretical physicist and mathematician, screenwriter and author. He has also written books for the general public, five of which have been New York Times best-sellers, including The Drunkard's Walk: How Randomness Rules Our Lives, which was chosen as a New York Times notable book, and short-listed for the Royal Society Science Book Prize; The Grand Design, co-authored with Stephen Hawking, which argues that invoking God is not necessary to explain the origins of the universe; War of the Worldviews, co-authored with Deepak Chopra; and Subliminal: How Your Unconscious Mind Rules Your Behavior, which won the 2013 PEN/E. O. Wilson Literary Science Writing Award. This second adventure in The Kids Of Einstein Elementary time-travel series takes place on the day the Titanic sinks in 1912. Kenny, Jose, and Steffi plan to return to visit baby dinosaur Sammy from their first adventure, but don't notice the controls in the time machine have been changed until it is too late. On board the Titanic they meet Emma and warn her that the ship will sink that night. Emma and her mother must get on a lifeboat fast. But Emma won't go until she can find her kitten Mittens first. Can the children help find the hiding kitten and still return to their time machine before the ship sinks? Children in the early elementary grades will enjoy this page-turner. Black and white illustrations accompany the text. Also includes explanations for mathematical concepts including probability, combination locks, odds, fair games, and timing. Kids in grades 2 and 3 will be able to read this themselves, while younger children will enjoy having it read aloud.

This chapter book was a pleasant surprise because it also taught math concepts throughout. The theme of the book (the sinking of the Titanic) was more mature, and probably was a little over Dylan's head, but he enjoyed the description of the game of odds played in the book, and why it was unfair even though outwardly it appeared fair.
