Building from the stories in Under God, each of the 60 four-page readings opens with Scripture and then presents a theme--including justice, mercy, and sacrifice, among others--illustrated in the lives and events of our country's past. Excerpts from Under God are married with deeper biblical exploration of these virtues, followed by tips on how they can be put into action in young people's lives today. Questions for further study and discussion starters facilitate the use of Living Under God in group settings.
Fabulous devotional. Daily reading that begin with a story from the formation of our country, then a parallel story from the bible, then a section about applying it to your life, then a challenge to add that topic to your own life.
This book was not a normal chapter book, it was a book filled with short stories. These short stories contained real life situations of people’s lives being put out on the line for the one thing they love the most, Jesus. One of the many stories that stuck out to me is called, “The Power of Prayer.” This specific story was about a Cuban pastor, (Pastor Vila) being taken captive because he was praying inside his home. The latest move by the Cuban government implemented a new law that designed to close down house churches everywhere. They put this law into place because the growth of the congregation was quickly growing, having there be two thousand five hundred people. The exponential growth “threatened” the government; therefore they made such a law that made church services inside a home illegal. Even then, the Cuban government tried to close all the churches in the surrounding area, the community protested and the churches stayed open. Because of everyone who constantly prayed for Pastor Vila he was released from prison, but was put on house arrest. He stayed on house arrest for the next six years. On March 7, 2002 he was released from house arrest and went back to living a normal life.
Jesus Freaks was by far one of the most inspirational books I have ever read. I, like thousands of other Christians can sometimes be afraid to step out of my comfort zone and share Jesus Christ with others. This book encouraged me to stay strong in my faith. I believe the author’s purpose was exactly this, to encourage people to witness to others who need it. I would most certainly recommend this book to anyone was needs a little encouragement!
The theme of this book was definitly religion. It gave hundreds of stories of people and what they had to go to through because of thier faith.
Living Under God is a different type of devotional. Each reading looks at men, women, and events that shaped America's history. In chronological order, beginning with the Pilgrims' landing in 1620 and moving onwards to people who are currently alive and making a difference, Toby Mac and Michael Tait examine history and relate it to us today.
Each devotion begins with a two to three page historical vignette. Next comes a passage from the Bible that relates to the events described. For example, the story of Abraham directly corresponds to the pilgrims. The final two sections of each devotion come under the heading Living It. The first suggests a practical application of both historical and Biblical events to the reader's life. The second provides questions for journaling, prayer, and discussion.
Although written with teens in mind (and some of the questions are specifically focused toward that age group) the devotions are fascinating with appeal to all ages. This would be an ideal devotional for parents and teens to do together because the opportunities for both to learn and grow are immense. As with their first book, Under God, Toby Mac and Michael Tait forge fascinating new ground with a unique, life-changing message.
