The Christmas Gift

Rate this book
Every school has its legend; Ben Jackson was Maple Grove Elementary's. He has been held back five years in a row; he was exposed to nuclear radiation as a child; he was raised in the woods by bears. So went the many assessments of Ben Jackson by his sixth-grade peers. Over-sized and under-niced , Ben was the school bully. As the school year begins, new student Scott stands up to Ben, and as a result, becomes Ben s new daily target. From the annoying comments to the humiliating pranks, Ben assures a day doesn't pass without making Scott's life miserable. But in this story of forgiveness, tolerance, and unconditional love, both Scott and Ben make a remarkable transformation that will leave you with a fresh understanding of the meaning of Christmas in your life.

This is his first novel, and Bill is a gifted writer. For the genre, this is the best of the "Christmas [object:]" books I've read. Which is to say, if you read this, I defy you not to feel some kind of positive emotion at the end. I'd read B. Bennett over RP Evans any day. I won't lie, I got a little misty at the end. This novel definitely stays with you, too.

Don't let the title fool you. This is really more a book about forgiveness and understanding than Christmas. It's about a 6th grade boy who is bullied and takes the time to find out why the bully does what he does. I think it should be required reading for every student age 10 and up. It's a really quick read and I think the kids would enjoy it.

Wow. I am a sucker for Christmas stories of all kinds, and this one did not fail to make me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

This is a quick read. I picked it up on my lunch break, and proceeded to get completely sucked into the story and finish it within the hour. It's one of those stories that really makes you think about your actions and how they can affect other people. The residual message of forgiveness and understanding is one that I know will stay with me for a while to come.

If you enjoy feel-good stories, then this is one you'll want to check out. I read Richard Paul Evans' The Christmas Box every year for Christmas, and I'm definitely adding this one to my list, as well.

The only thing that I would have liked to have gotten out of this book was simply more. I enjoyed the story, and it's a beautiful, simple story, but I would have loved more development and a bit more description. However, with or without it, I found the message loud and clear.

Overall, I think this would be a good story to read out loud around the fire, to spread the warm and fuzzies everywhere!

(NOTE: I received a complimentary copy of this book for review from the publisher, which in no way influenced this review).

We are home during the coronavirus and I wanted to escape and do a workout on my elliptical. I selected this book, which I've had here forever, and am going to get to keep even longer, since the library is closed. It was the perfect book! It had me at the Herman Melville quote in the beginning, and I read the whole thing in one workout and got 7.5 miles in and had just enough time on that last half mile to ponder the book and read the back and front reviews and acknowledgements and pray a minute. This was such a smooth book to read, and yes, it touched my heart. I am a Christian who believes in the power of forgiveness, taught to us and demonstrated by God Himself through Jesus Christ, so it meant even more to me to read this story. It was a great escape on a day of overwhelm. It was a peaceful, happy reminder of life, love, and the journey of friendships. If you like Richard Paul Evans, you'll like this book. It kind of had that feel to it, the way the story flowed and was told. I've never read any of your other books, Mr. Bennett, but I'll go see what else you have now! Thanks for writing this! It definitely is one to share and remember and ponder.

This was a sweet and short book about forgiveness and the finite quantity of time. I read this between coming home from the library and finishing dinner, and then promptly informed my children they each needed to read it too.

Honestly, I will probably halt some plans tomorrow to read it aloud to them. I love book that leave me wanting to be a better, kinder person. The world, and I, could do with more marinating within this genre.

If you’re looking for a feel good message for the holiday season, or anytime, this is a quick way to that golden space.

What a wonderful book !!!! . How fitting a story for this time of year of giving and receiving. But this story should be read for any time of year. So many lessons can be learnt. I had gone to the library and was passing a display of Christmas/ holiday books and this book was on display there. I read the inside jacket and thought this looks interesting to read. I am so happy to have picked it up. I read this book in one sitting today and cried a few times while reading it. As another reviewer wrote “ he has given us a lasting gift”. This book is a definite read......

Breath takingly real

Hate and prejudice seem to come so easy to we humans. It seems both can be overcome by getting to know the individuals we have these feelings toward. This book is a good guide toward that goal.

If only kids of today could act with good morals to say "I'm sorry". Ben lived a tough life but didn't want to show it.

For me, one of my favorite things about this time of year, the holiday season, is the ability to sink into amazing books that truly set the feeling for what the Christmas season is truly about - others. There is something magical about the ability to bring joy and happiness to those around us and there are so few treasured stories out there that send the true message of love, kindness and how each of us should take a look at who the people around us really are. The Christmas Gift is one of those stories.

Last night, nestled on the couch with my children, I decided to open up The Christmas Gift and begin reading. Before I knew it, a little over an hour had passed and I was reading the final words, closing the cover and allowing the story to resonant through me. As I read this magical tale, weaved to perfection, by Mr. Bennett, I was brought to tears. Such a simple, and all too common story - the story of a bully, disliked by all - truly looked at by none. Is bullying right? By no means, no. However, Bill Bennett is able to force the reader, in a kindly way, to take a look within themselves and question just how they perceive those around them and whether or not their are able to really take the time to delve into a person, looking behind their shell, before persecuting them. So often we are quick to judge and want revenge when someone says or does something that we dislike. What if, instead, we were to take a step back, truly think about the situation and be the "better" person by using the powerful gift of forgiveness?

This is a lesson soon learned by sixth grader, Scott, who is a new student and quickly singled out by Ben, a boy that is notorious both in school and in town, and is the center of outlandish tales. It is one afternoon, while in the cafeteria, when Scott stands up to Ben by making a not-so-nice comment. That comment haunts Scott until he has a heart-to-heart talk with his father. Coming to terms with the idea that in order to lift the burden of guilt from himself, he must reach within, find forgiveness and find out exactly why Ben does and says the things that he does. Scott makes a surprising visit to Ben's house to apologize. What Scott (nor Ben) realize is that after that courageous stance, neither one of their lives will ever be the same again. Ben is nothing like he seems and the magic that Scott finds beneath those "tough" wrappings is a true gift that he will carry with him for the rest of his life.

The Christmas Gift is a story and lesson of life, or rather the road of life that should be taken by all, to make a better society. This is a story that will touch the heart, the soul and lives of each and every person who is blessed with the gift of reading it. I honestly cannot think of a more perfect gift to give to those loved ones, family, friends, or perhaps even those that are not the kindest. The Christmas Gift is guaranteed to remain with the reader long after the book has been read, as well as the perfect story to re-read again and again. I cannot recommend this book enough and greatly look forward to more work by R. William (Bill) Bennett!

What a great story about the importance of understanding and kindness toward others. Everyone has a story. Everyone has pain. Everyone has needs and is seeking healing or peace in some form or another...even the bullies. Great book to read with the family or alone. Full disclosure: My dad wrote this book. I LOVE the story, but love it even more knowing where it came from.

My attempt at an objective, unbiased review: Great story. I love Christmas tales that aren't about magic, but more are about kindness, caring, and loving or forgiving. The only thing lacking: I'd really like to know more of the backstory of some of the characters. It's nice the book is a simple and relatively short read (could read through it with family/kids in 3-4 nights), but I wanted more.

The Christmas Gift is a heartfelt tale of forgiveness and compassion that can be read and savored year round.

It begins with an angry client who's trying to harangue his reluctant lawyer into suing someone who's offended him. The rest of the story is told in flashback style. It begins in September 1968 and centers on two boys, Scott and a sixth grade bully, Ben. When Scott finally stands up to Ben, he stumbles upon a secret that eventually forms the basis for an unlikely friendship.

Touching and tender, The Christmas Gift engages quickly. The pace is brisk, the characters carefully drawn. At just 135 pages, "Gift" can be wrapped up in an afternoon and re-wrapped for another read later. Well worth the time.

This story is a beautiful tale of two sixth grade boys who start out as adversaries, but ultimately become the best of friends after one of them extends an apology, forgiveness and compassion to his former enemy. This is a touching story that illustrates the power of forgiveness to heal the wounds inflicted by thoughtless, hurtful comments.
This is a quick read; it actually felt more like a short story, but it brought tears to my eyes!

This is a wonderful story, a quick, easy read that is well worth the time. I thoroughly enjoyed it and will be recommending it to my family and friends. It teaches a great moral through the gift of story. Well written, interesting and keeps the readers attention throughout. I especially loved the ending and how it all ties together. Thanks Bill!

The importance of asking and granting forgiveness is a beautiful Grace.
Finished in one sitting, cried when I saw what was going to happen. Find myself wondering if dealing with all bullies would be so easy as a conversation, but then as adults...one doesn't have the advantage of a bullies understanding mom helping out. Do we?

An inspirational story. A great message told in the form of a flashback that resonates with the Christmas season. Forgiveness is an excellent message around Christmas and the story illustrates it well. The author does a good job of balancing story details with the main message to keep the story moving.

This is one of the greatest books I have ever read. It has an amazing message in it. I read this out loud with my family, and by the end of the book we were all in tears. It was a really easy read and it only took about an hour but it definitely changed me.

This is a 142 page, very quick read about a boy who was bullied and who forgave and how it changed both lives. I probably would have given it more stars if I had not just read "Jacob T Marley" which is still having an impact on me!

I read this aloud to the family while traveling. Ages 4-48 were engaged in the story and moved and inspired by the message. It came at a time when more compassion served to bless our family greatly. An inspiring story that reminds us to always give people the benefit of the doubt.
