In my opinion Stuart Gordon was a writer that seemed to have that rare ability to shoot straight from the pre or subconscious in the same way that David Lynch does. His writing can be extremely psychedelic and this lends a real sense of atmosphere to his work. He manages to pull off the really neat trick of infusing his work with this ethereal quality whilst also maintaining his narrative drive. This is particularly on show here in 'Archon', which is great fun. I really love his writing.
Read this series back when it first came out and would love to see it reissued in ebook format now that I know more about the time periods the main characters travel through.
By the time he passed away, far too young, Stuart Gordon had apparently stopped writing and become an EFL teacher in China. Forty-odd years on from reading his 'One Eye' trilogy, and having tracked down and read the five very eccentric hell's angel books he hacked out for NEL in the early 70s, I've now decided to read anything else he put out. This one makes it seem a worthwhile thing to do. It's a fantasy, set in a version of our own world, with time travel, amnesia and curious shifts in point of view all to the fore. The characterisation is sympathetic and some of the people and superhumans we meet even have a touch of the tragic about them. Well worth getting hold of if you like Steven Donaldson, Clive Barker or Neil Gaiman.
"The first of the ""Watchers"" trilogy, this is an excellent fantasy, taking in modern (and near future) Britain, an ancient pre-historic setting, and Medieval Languedoc at the height of the Cathar movement. [return][return]Stuart Gordon weaves a fantastic story with all these elements, centred around a family whose daughter is drawn back in time to the time of the Cathars. She becomes the embodiment of an ancient alien being (one of the Archons) who took physical form to teach primitive humans. Their original purpose became warped when they were seduced by their physical forms (which reflects some of the principles of Dualism). [return][return]Gordon crams ideas from mythology, religion and science into these books and you have to reread them several times to absorb it all (a great excuse to read a fabulous series of books)."
