John R. W. Stott is known worldwide as a preacher, evangelist, and communicator of Scripture. For many years he served as rector of All Souls Church in London, where he carried out an effective urban pastoral ministry. A leader among evangelicals in Britain, the United States and around the world, Stott was a principal framer of the landmark Lausanne Covenant (1974). His many books, including Why I Am a Christian and The Cross of Christ, have sold millions of copies around the world and in dozens of languages. Great little book by John R. W. Stott. Taken from a series of sermons. Very good exegetical illustrations for each of his chapters - God and the Bible, Jesus and the Bible, the Holy Spirt and the Bible, the church and the Bible, and the individual Christian and the Bible. His use of John 13 - Jesus washing the disciples feet - is powerfully presented and offers a compelling new understanding a familiar story. Worth the read.

Easy reading overview of why we should read the Bible and what its purpose is and what it's for. It's based on a series of sermons that John Stott gave.

This short book uses multiple examples to underline the huge importance of God’s Word. It is very encouraging to the believer, and may even cause the nonbeliever to stop and think.

If you can find a copy, buy it. While it may be dated, this book taught my mind, stirred my heart, and sang to my soul. Great for all Christians--especially those in my generation.

Stott knows his Bible. And he relays its significance without using jargon or fancy words. Stott writes so simply that youth can understand, yet so deeply that elders can learn:

“The Bible is God’s self-disclosure, the divine autobiography” (80).
“The Bible comes from God, centers on Christ and is inspired by the Holy Spirit” (42).
“The church did not confer authority on these documents, but simply acknowledged the authority they already possessed” (65).
“Christians who neglect the Bible simply do not mature” (75).

What is the Bible? What do we do with it? And why do we need it? This 93-page book tackles the hard questions, and I will surely reference it again and again.

We cannot understand the Bible without the help of God’s Spirit. Still, this book is a great companion!

Lots of really excellent nuggets throughout this book. I very much enjoyed Stott's insights into the nature and importance of Scripture, but I can't wholeheartedly recommend the book because of some things I feel Stott erred on, such as his interpretation of Matthew 5:20 and John 13:10. If some of these little things weren't in the book, I would have given it five stars, since the warp and woof of it is so excellent.
