Fred McFeely Rogers was an American educator, minister, songwriter, and television host. Rogers was the host of the television show Mister Rogers' Neighborhood, in production from 1968 to 2001. Rogers was also an ordained Presbyterian minister.
Dated pictures, but well written text that gives sound basic information about going to the hospital. Does not really get into how sick a child might feel to have to go to a hospital though.
I read the nonfiction book Going to the Hospital by Fred Rogers. The book begins with a note from Mr. Rogers to parents/guardians where he explains the purpose of the book and how it is important to inform children about going to the hospital and to try and not be scared. The book continues talking about how you may get sick, but sometimes you are too sick to get well at home and you have to go into the hospital. It explains that you may need to pack a bag of your belongings if you are staying for a while. Then you go to the hospital, wait in the waiting area and then get admitted. A nurse and/or doctor will take your vitals and you will get a hospital bed. Some children may need x-rays, have their blood drawn, or a urine sample taken. The story ends will reassuring children that a hospital is not a place to fear because their are friendly people there to help you. This book is for nursery-intermediate. It is a very informative book that can be appropriate for this range of ages. The photographs show various ages of children as patients. There aren't any illustrations, but there are photographs. The photographs are detailed, represent different races, and help children feel less anxious or scared about going to the hospital. I would definitely recommend this book. It is very informative to adults as well as children. It helps parents/guardians talk about the hospital with their children and it informs children about what to expect at the hospital. The more difficult vocabulary is defined right in the text of the story. The one thing that is slightly not ideal about the book is that it is older. It was published in 1988, so the photographs are out-dated. Although I do not think it takes away the purpose and effectiveness of the book as a whole.
