Surprisingly straightforward and interesting recipes. Comes across as a more Californian (or west coast)- healthy style cookbook in my opinion. I Want to try the lime and cilantro chicken salad. Good range of recipes (also good buy- book was $6 in a Temecula antique store).
I’m a big fan of Nordstrom cookbooks, as I am now on my third with this review. This particular book I searched for a little more extensively, since it was published in 2005 and is no longer printed. This book was put together by the Director of Restaurant Operations, Michael Northern and John Clem, who was the Vice-President of Restaurants for Nordstrom. Both have a talent for finding recipes that are amazingly simple, yet quite elegant and interesting. It’s such a fascinating combination to see as I get more and more comfortable trying out new recipes. These books have very few weird ingredients and the recipes themselves are not overly complicated (read: they don’t take more than an hour or two to put together).
What I really like about this particular book is that it’s for larger gatherings, but many of the recipes are fairly simple. If you’ve entertained before you know how stressful trying out a new and/or complicated recipe can be. It can be even more stressful when you aren’t positive it’s going to be a success. What I’ve found with these books is that it’s very difficult to do a poor job if you truly follow their instructions. Even for more complicated recipes, like Prime Rib, they give great pointers on cooking temperatures to look for depending on how your generally like your meat cooked. Check out my blog for some pictures once I get into this book.
A gift from a good friend who is a great cook. Nice photos and very clear instructions. I made my first recipe last night, success!, and marked quite a few others TBC (to be cooked).
Keepers: Sherry's Pecans pg. 15, Mixed Berry & Chicken Salad pg. 60, Authentic fettuccine Alfredo pg. 79. Love the "potluck" section. Every recipe has photo's that are foodie porn.
