A must read for anyone interested in South Asia and the pre-Modi country of India. The clergy explained tensions among the nation's diverse religions and the interminably irritating caste system that mars this (the world's largest) Parliamentary democracy is admirably explained with clear and precisely chosen examples.

Clearly old India (Punjab was divided by Britain into Pakistan and India in the late 1940s) which included Bangladesh and Pakistan amounts to the largest nation in the world. This book is an excellent beginning for anyone wanting to get below the surface, understand the tensions among Pakistan and India of ver Kashmir, China and India over the Himalayas, and the antiquity of the civilization we might do well to support in this immensely varied and complicated part of Asia.

A little dry in my opinion, but if you have not read many books on modern India it may be worth a try
