Once considered a quaint throwback to simpler times, the time-honored craft of knitting has seen a tremendous renewal lately. These days all the hippest folks are knitting their own scarves, sweaters, hats-even socks! With clear step-by-step instructions and an alphabetical format for easy reference, The Encyclopedia of Knitting Techniques will have you working your way to the cutting edge quick as you can say "knit 1, purl 2".
Packed with all the basic techniques, including a well-varied stitch pattern gallery with sharp, colorful photos. "How to Design" is a bit to general to be helpful, and the styles are rather dated, but they're lovely all the same. This book was very useful in my first levels of TKGA Master Handknitter.
Decorative, meditative, practical, and rewarding, the time-honored craft of knitting has seen a tremendous renewal or interest recently. These days it seems all the hippest people are knitting their own scarves, sweaters, hats, and socks. This latest addition to our popular Encylcopedia of Art Techniques series includes dozens of designs and techniques for this appealing and practical craft, with clear step-by-step instructions and an A-to-Z format for easy reference. It's all here, from basic stitches to complex creations, plus a gallery of fabulous classic and contemporary designs for inspiration.
Excellent resource for a beginning to advanced knitter. The photos and charts, tips, and examples are excellent. The review on the cover says there's 200 of them. Then there is the stitch collection - at least half of the book is beautiful color pictures and diagrams for everything from stockinette and moss stitch and patterns consisting only of knit and purl variations to lace knitting, fair isle, intarsia, entrelac and more. A small section on designing is included near the end, but it does not go into enough detail to be useful. All in all, this book is worth the money I paid for it.
I much prefer Vogue Knitting to this one. It has at least as many stitches (if not more) and so much more information. I found the "inspirational gallery" to be quite out-dated and uninteresting. I also found a lot of descriptions confusing. I'd skip this one and just get vogue knitting. It has all the info in this and more and with better presentation.
This was the book that started off the obsession with knitting books! It's a little dated now and, to be honest, there are better books to teach you how to knit. However, it's perfectly serviceable (I taught myself a lot using it) and its a great reference of stitches for medium - advanced knitters. When designing my own patterns this is one I come back to time and again.
The pictures are so inspirational. I keep going back to this book and have checked it out from the library 3 times in 5 years. As I've grown as a knitter, different parts of the book make greater sense.
