Wings at War Series, No. 3 Commemorative Edition. Originally written and published by the Headquarters, Army Air Forces, Office of Assistant Chief of Air Staff, Intelligence, in the 1940s. Tells the story of the Battle for Guadalcanal in 1942, focusing on the operations of the 11th Bombardment Group and the 67th Fighter Squadron.
Informative, but sparse. It is clearly what it is, a first draft of history of USAAF operations early in the Solomon Islands campaign. With the clarity of hindsight, there are mistakes, of course. It is however, some of the best available information on the 67th FS. For understandable reasons, popular histories of the air war at Guadalcanal almost exclusively focus on the Navy and in particular the Navy aviators that were there. This is a great little resource to remind us that the men of the USAAF were present in theater and while their air-to-air contributions were limited by the substandard air frame they were using, their development of CAS tactics on the fly contributed immensely to the over all success of the Guadalcanal Campaign.
Short but enjoyable tale about the AAF's contribution to the air war for the lower Solomons. As it was written shortly following the campaign it is interesting to note just how exaggerated our beliefs were as regards both air and sea successes.
