An anthology of romantic prose and poetry from the great writers, Hardy, Bronte, Austen, Shakespeare etc, also many writers I hadn't heard of before which is a good way to introduce you to new authors. I found the extracts from novels I hadn't already read a bit difficult to get into however as I didn't know the characters or storyline. Another issue for me was the spanning of the centuries from one page to the next which could be a bit confusing at times, getting used to the different styles of writing, but EJH arranged the book like this to avoid blocks of writing in a particular style and juxtapose very different people in the same mood.
