The Twin Peaks Unwrapped Podcast has over 200 episodes, and now they have a book. Hosts Ben Durant & Bryon Kozaczka have interviewed just about every actor on Twin Peaks. They have spoken with all the writers, fans and crazy theorists over their 200 episodes. This book compiles all they have unwrapped about David Lynch & Mark Frost's Twin Peaks over the past few years. There also is a ton of new content from people who have not guested on the show like a Special Agent that we all know and Agent Cooper. Kyle MacLachlan talked with Ben and Bryon for the book. This book starts with the Pilot episode of Twin Peaks and goes through all 29 original episodes, Fire Walk With Me, The Missing Pieces and Twin The Return. The book is broken up into a chapter an episode. They talk with the writer of the episode or one of the main actors from that episode. It is a perfect companion book as you watch along with the series.Who all is interviewed for this book? Not having listened to the podcast, this book was basically... OK? It doesn't really offer that much insight into the world of Twin Peaks, and after a while the snippets of interviews tend to turn very samey - yes, it's wonderful and amazing to work with David Lynch, but how about something more in depth? Some funny story from set, some actor's personal headcanon, or some ruminations from the podcast hosts? "You'll have to listen to the podcast for that," you'll probably say, but if this is the sort of analysis they do in their show, I can live without it.
This book is actually pretty not-good, and as the authors involve and therefore, by proxy, represent the greater TP "community," the rather embarrassing earnestness of this project does a huge disservice to all.
I have not listened to any of their podcasts, but I'm lead to conclude that for all the access they gained to so many key players involved in the show's production, they really pissed away each and every opportunity given to them. It becomes apparent very quickly that their main question- perhaps only question in some cases- was merely, "what's it like working with David Lynch?" After the first 100 pages, this got tired.
The authors read like a couple of Chris Farleys, telling each other how cool it was when Agent Cooper said this or when David Lynch did that, with no deeper exploration into much of anything at all. Ever. Adding insult to injury is an INFURIATING number of typos-- the most I have ever seen; we're talking 50+ here. Is the guy's name "Renzo" or "Ranzo?" They use both, multiple times on the same page.
All in all, a stupifyingly amateurish project about such a great tv show. I found out about the book via Facebook clickbait, and I'm glad I deleted my account.
I really enjoyed this book from Ben and Bryon! (I actually almost missed a flight while sitting right at the gate because I was so invested in it.) Each chapter follows an episode of the show with insight from cast, crew, and fans. Much of it I hadn’t heard before so that was a treat. I was sad to hear that they will be ending their Twin Peaks Unwrapped podcast this year, but I can’t think of a better way than this book to encapsulate so much of what made their show so fun and engaging through the years. Spoiler note: Make sure you’ve watched the entire series plus FWWM before reading as spoilers can be found from start to finish!
I’m still working on solving the puzzle of TWIN PEAKS. This book works as an exercise in nostalgia and appreciation. While it doesn’t unveil any new takes on the source material, it does work to show a deep appreciation for Frost and Lynch and the world the two created.
Wish the pictures had been in color but the rest of the book was an amazing compilation of the podcast and interviews, as well as the contributions from the community. What a great gift to the Twin Peaks Universe of fans, crew, and cast!!
