Really great insight on the backstory of what really propelled the Civil War and what kind of man Lincoln truly was. Incredibly disappointing to find out how our society credits him such inordinate levels of honor, given the evidence in Charles Minor’s extensive research. I’m glad I didn’t neglect the appendix, because the very last was an excellent summary (an essay by Paul S Witcomb) of why Lincoln was a despot, a traitor to his country, and why the war needn’t have occurred at all.
Impressive research, especially considering the time period. This is not the same as what can be found in modern scholarship, but a valuable resource, nonetheless.
This was written almost a century ago. Many books about the Civil War that were written over a 100 years ago have a lot of mythology and legends about their subject matter. Little is mentioned about import issues that brought about the Civil War. The economic depression of 1857 is not even mentioned. That Lincoln violated the Constitution on many occasions but that is not an issue in this novel. He is made to look like a die heart abolish movement member even though he was not. President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863, and the book would have you think that this freed the slaves even though this is not the case. It was the 13th Amendment that freed the slaves but this is not in this book.
