93 pages, story of Raggedy Ann and Andy adventures in the meadow starting with pulling a thorn from the foot of a canary and a story told by a gnome, bw and color illustrations
Johnny Gruelle was an American artist, political cartoonist, children's book author and illustrator (and even songwriter). He is known as the creator of Raggedy Ann and Raggedy Andy. He had such confidence in his design that often he would create the final ink work without first sketching in pencil.
My 7 year old asked me to read a book that was an old favorite of mine, and I chose this one, doubting that it would be remembered from three years ago. The 7 year old says, "It was a fun book and all children that don't like their freckles would like the chapter about the brownie. The brownie kisses the children that he likes and it leaves a little brown spot, and that's how you get freckles. If you like stories that are exciting, you would like this. Also, the fairies play with Raggedy Ann and Andy, and they make the Raggedy dolls fly."
Original Review: I and my mother read this book to my children, and they all enjoyed it - although the middle child, age 8, points out the discrepancy between the text where Raggedy's smile is painted on and cannot change and the pictures where she does have different expressions. My copy of the book has a handwritten note from my paternal grandparents to me and my sisters, so this book is a family tradition. Love the pictures and the little critters and the story about why parents' kisses heal little hurts. Maybe middle child should love the story about the Brownie's kiss. As a parent, I like the Paper Makers story. My oldest daughter, age 10, says, "It is a book that we like to read together that makes you feel nice and warm inside."
I read these books when I was little and I remember loving the pictures. Re-reading this it is diffently for kids but would be a perfect bedtime story book. The chapters are short and sweet and each has a small lesson to learn. Ultra high on the cute factor.
Wonderful, fanciful stories for children that teach some basic principles of good living. Delightful characters, mostly "bugs" in this book, such as a spider, a cricket, and a grasshopper family.
