Cy Gets A Sex Demon

Rate this book
The job started just like any job...

Find heir to billionaire fortune, check. Bust up demon brothel sanctioned by the head boss person, no-problemo. Pissing off a well-positioned member of the fae court is all in a night’s work, but finding love with the office temp who just might know more than he’s letting on? That was an issue.

But once Cy finds love in just the one particular wrong place, his easy-going lifestyle of kill or be killed has to change. Demon brothel or not, if he doesn’t find the missing heir, he’ll probably not see the end of the day, and that is finally starting to mean something other than just not getting paid. It helps that through Cy’s minuscule talents, no one can lie to him, but it’s not as though he has any home-court advantage when the consequences go from business to strictly personal.

Oh, and he also gets a sex demon...

Angela Fiddler is the occasional pen name of Barbara Geiger. Barbara didn’t learn that she had lived in three out of the four Northern Alberta towns that had a known or suspected Wendigo attack until well after she’d moved south to Lethbridge. She grew up loving ghost stories and pony books, and spent most of her summers on the British Columbia coast, where she fell in love with the ocean.

As Angela Fiddler, she has written The Master of the Lines series as well as Cy and his sex demon problem books. As Barbara Geiger, she has written The Tempest trilogy, starting with Coral Were his Bones, which exists in the same universe as the Middlehill series, starting with Changeling, as well as various other novellas and short stories.

When she’s not following the exploits of selkies, sex demons and vampires, she writes epic fantasy and makes the occasional foray into science fiction and short stories.

This is certainly one of the more mysterious and hard-to-figure-out books I have read in a while. With a main character who tells the story in first person, so there are no explanations forthcoming since he is familiar with all the rules of this world, it made understanding what was going on really difficult. Sort of like a mystery wrapped in an enigma, camouflaged as a riddle. But I was intrigued enough by the secret agent/supernatural assassin vibe to keep going. And I have to say, Cy grew on me, and his particular brand of humor and self-deprecation was certainly part of what I really liked.

So, here’s the thing. Cy isn’t quite human, and although he never clearly says what he is, he definitely has some fae blood in his veins. He has certain powers, like being able to tell when people lie to him, and probably some other abilities that haven’t emerged yet. He works for some sort of undisclosed company, albeit as an independent contractor, so he has some freedom around his assignments. Not much, as it turns out, but enough to enable him to maneuver when necessary. I really liked that he was trying to be a badass (and he is, don’t get me wrong), but he has a big heart, and helping the underdog, whoever that is at any given moment, is a big part of what he does.

The story itself goes from mysterious, as in what-the-heck-is-even-going-on, to action-packed within a few chapters. The task of finding the billionaire’s grandson quickly turns into busting up a demon brothel, keeping a lover alive, and freeing one of the demons Cy owes a personal debt to. The fights with his boss are epic, and the love for his cat made me smile. A great mix in an action-adventure, and by the end I was definitely ready for the sequel. Luckily, ‘The Care and Feeding of Sex Demons’ is already waiting in my TBR folder.

If you like larger-than-life main characters of the supernatural persuasion, if a somewhat quirky life-and-death quest for answers and missing people is your thing, and if you’re looking for a read that is as suspenseful and sometimes brutal as it is funny and hot, then you will probably like this novel.

Basically this story is about a freelance assassin/spy life basically doing his job which is sometimes and the sex demon is barely a part of the story. The ending was one of the few satisfying endings that I have read. Most of the characters are fae or part fae, but I think that most of their world is human. The world isn't really described, but I see some real potential with this author. It's hard to describe a fantasy world that the mc should be perfectly accustomed to when the story's in first person. An explanatory preface could have been nice, but I didn't need it since I'm familiar with modern fae mythology. Overall, I highly enjoyed this story and gave it five stars for the overall plot.

1.5 stars.... I didn't like it. I didn't really empathize with any character, the plot was often confusing, but mostly boring and just when it got to a point where it could have been interesting (moving in with a new boyfriend and his very own sex demon) the book ended. So, I'm surprised I even finished it.

If it's was possible to vote -5 stars, I would have done it. In the M/M Romance Group, we have a topic named 'WTF Way to rip me out of the story!' Well, this book's a WTF is that???.

I was not even able to finish the first chapter! Completely incomprehensible. We're pull in the middle of a world that even the writer do not seems to understand. The writing's confuse me, a lot.

Three stars is probably generous. There was very little world building and little to no character development either. The story was kind of difficult to follow at times, and some of the actions seemed more non sequitor than logical next steps. Couldn't find much to make me really care about the characters. Just meh.
