This book was a disappointment. It looked like exactly what I was looking for: an overview of the history, society, and culture of Egypt from ancient to modern times that wasn't 500+ pages long. I did learn a fair bit of information, but unfortunately, the book is far from "enthralling." It reads like a high school student's book report. In addition, it sometimes just throws terms out there with no explanation, and I found myself having to consult Google. For example, it says "Since hieroglyphs were difficult to create, the Egyptians developed hieretic writing, which was a type of cursive script. Later, demotic writing was developed for ordinary documents." What is demotic writing? How is it different from hieretic? The book doesn't even provide a picture. I had to go to Wikipedia to find out what these things are. This book needs slightly more detail and an author with better writing style / storytelling abilities. That said, it still may be the best short introduction.

“Enthralling” might be a bit of a stretch as this is more like a podcast or old-school guidebook but… it successfully does exactly what it’s supposed to. Super concise and clear history of 3000+ years of Egyptian history, recommend before any trip!

I personally should have read this before my Egypt trip but still fun!

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review. I found it to be very informative covering Egyptian history with many facts given that I wasn't aware of before.

This was a bit of a hard read for me due to it not being able to keep my attention for long periods of time. It is very informative about the history of Egypt. I just feel that the writing was lack luster in that it was written in a way that wasn't very engaging for me.

Interesting because it's about Egypt, uninteresting structure, presentation of facts and a put-off in the general style.
