A book compiled with the old Fijian and Rotuman folklore. I enjoyed reading this book. There were stories that explained why Fijians and Rotumans viewed certain things sacred or how they interact with each other. The story of the God from Kadavu who battled Dakuwaqa and won explained the playful animosity between the people of Kadavu and the people from the West. It's a great read and some editions of the book have a map of Fiji on the back page.

I really loved this volume. Granted, the stories have been "re-told" by A.W. Reed, so it is hard to tell what was in the original folklore and what was literary embellishment, but as a collection of stories, the whole thing was enchanting. I found several tales in it that I fell in love with (more than in many other folktale collections where I usually find two or three). The imagery was vivid, the stories exciting and unusual (to the Western reader, anyway), and all in all it was a really fun book to read.

Very educational especially for us Fijians as it has alot of information on our past, early settlers of Fiji & their ancient Gods. This was all before Chrisitianity cameto our shores on 12th October,1835.
