Artificial life form, Shakbout Mansard just wanted a quiet, ordinary life with his family. As one of the selected few of the Bottle Born who live as free citizens, this was a reasonable ambition. Unfortunately, Shakbout has dangerous knowledge of a plot to overthrow the government of Mengchi, making him a target for both the plotters and the security forces. At the same time the most dangerous bottle born terrorist in the systems wants Shakbout to commit a crime that will ignite a secret systems-wide war between factions of the Natural and the Bottle Born. But even these problems are small compared to the secret that Shakbout has been hiding for a decade. Soon, he will have to take desperate measures to save those he loves... and the lives of all free bottle born lifeforms across the systems.

Shakout is called a bottle born in his world, although it wasn’t a bottle where he was brewed. It seems it was some huge vat the produced other Fire Dragon bottle beings. His world is compose of Naturals (born the old fashioned way), bottle born, and sometimes a baby from a Natural and a Bottle Born. He realized the danger to his wife and baby and spent years working with another unnatural (a aquatic form) to create a safe haven for his wife and baby, Petra. This is not only science fiction, but has a huge mix of fantasy also. His child is captured to facilitate the return of the vanished queen. He will need a special charm to rescue her and survive the final battle. Will he live long enough to succeed? Continuous battle for fast paced action.

odd

A great deal of imagination, written in a unique style. Which is another word for bad sentence structure and thought. I found myself confused and lost in the direction of the story a large number of times. The story doesn’t flow and I didn’t care about the main character. Very depressing story line.

Read Kindle book using Alexa audio asset. Starts well but abilities and social complexities start to multiply so the plot becomes too elaborate to be real. Purchased this edition on January 15, 2025, for free.

Hands down, Shakbout is my all-time favorite sci-fi character! I can guarantee Mr. Carton, that he will have me as a fan ONLY if he writes more books with Shakbout as the protagonist.

3.5 really.
Good characters and action.
An interesting story within a story.
Great, intricate world building.
Dropped it a full point due to a maddening lack of proof reading and editing.
