This book of poems was honest and immersive. I was caught up in the writing and my own experiences this book pulled out of me as I followed the poems. I enjoyed it very much. *This book was given to me for free at my request and I provided this voluntary review.*

If someone would be told me a while back that there would be an author who not only is a poet but has a passion for Greek Mythology as big as mine, I thought you'd be crazy. I was mesmerized by the vivid imagination and abundance of mythology references made The Sandpiper's Spell one of the best works of poetry I've read in a long time. I also appreciate Tom Pearson's unique method of slapping the reader's face in the best way possible of a reality check to let them know how difficult the world can be but, he fact they are not alone. Captivating, relatable and truly a pure breath of fresh air. Reminded me of why I love poetry in the first place.
Mesmerizing, Captivating, colorful and a pure joy to read. This book deserves 5 stars.

Tom Pearson’s ‘The Sandpiper’s Spell’ is a stunningly realized debut collection of imagery-laden prose.
‘The Sandpiper’s Spell’ (the poem) is split into seven parts, serving as a title page for seven thematic partitions. The subject matter here is as potent as it is varied, with topics ranging from contemplative ruminations on mortality to pensive observations on daily life. From one stanza to the next, Pearson’s masterful use of imagery and metaphor never ceases to surprise and amaze. Despite this collection’s debut status, Pearson has clearly arrived fully formed, as evidenced by the purposeful nature of his writing.
While the prose is both effective and evocative in its simplicity, there’s an undeniable level of depth here that ultimately incentivizes repeat visits. For instance, “Childhood” initially feels like a visual collage of highly personal images (presumably culled from Pearson’s youth), but lines like “running upwind in this death coat unraveling” hint that a far more esoteric observation is at work.
While the words are obviously the focus here, the formatting and visual layout are also crucial to fully absorbing Pearson’s work, something the author explains in further detail* in an opening note to the reader. With little in the way of traditional breaks or boundaries (there are no commas or periods to be found), Pearson relies on the negative space of each page to corral his writing and provide a sense of cadence.
Poetry is, if nothing else, subjective. Sure, there is a litany of ‘rules’ and ‘guidelines’ from which devout readers of prose can measure an author’s writing, but at the end of the day, it’s that which moves and makes an emotional impact that ultimately remains with us. In that regard, Tom Pearson’s ‘The Sandpiper’s Spell’ is a must-own collection for anyone interested in feeling inspired.
*While I purchased the digital version of this collection, given the beauty of the layout, I’d highly recommend purchasing the physical paperback.

The Sandpiper's Spell is a collection of poems by Tom Pearson. The poetry in this book is full of vivid imagery and colorful descriptive language that evokes emotions and contemplation. It is a very good read.
The Sandpiper's Spell is written in sections containing a selection of poems for each part. Each piece includes poems containing unique language, style, and length. Some are a few verses, while others are pages long. I found it impressive that one of the shortest poems is my favorite. It created a world in my imagination with only thirteen words. I feel like this attests to the skill of the author.
I most enjoyed this poetry by taking the time to consider each poem. There is a fair amount of complex language and imagery used to convey the intent behind the lyrical world. Unless you are a seasoned poetry reader, I think it'll take more than one read to understand all the passages. But once you do, the picturesque journey the author takes you on is beautifully written and immersive.

Tom Pearson's skillful use of imagery and form in this work is a joy. He blends the two perfectly in this seven-part volume. Using no punctuation, line breaks and spaces convey pauses and provide rhythm in these poems. As one might expect from the title, the sea is a major theme in his writing. He takes readers to many places throughout this work--the Florida Keys, mountains of America and Asia, a smoky bar, the Broken Arrow Trailer Park. His imagery is beautiful with even the 18-wheeler elevated by language. "18-wheelers resting/beyond the runway/white puppies/muzzles jutting/on a carpet of asphalt/wheelpaws tucked/beneath fat bellies" provides a delightful image. Pearson is a gifted writer and his use of language provides a wonderful experience for those who love poetry. However, anyone who loves the written word and the beauty of language will enjoy this creative and thought-provoking work. Pearson is a master of language and he uses it perfectly in this collection of poems.

The Sandpiper’s Spell by Tom Pearson was a joy an easy to read. The format of the novel was intuitively created as it splits up the poem titled The Sandpiper’s Spell into 6 different parts. In between the overarching poem are entries that talk about life, scenery, death and emotion. Pearson’s use of imagery brings his words to life as you picture Georgia sunsets and Greek gods. The condensed poems made this an easy but engulfing read. I look forward on reading what else Pearson has published.

A few poems in and the reader can tell with certainty that Tom Pearson is an evocative writer with a fine command over language and imagery. As an infrequent reader of poetry, I had to reread a few pieces to grasp them better but found my overall experience with this book to be creative, dreamy, insightful and light. The poetry fans would adore The Sandpiper's Spell. My favourite pieces include Patience, winter's miracle, and collecting.

The Sandpiper's Spell is a beautiful and evocative collection of poetry with a strong sense of place. The descriptions are both grounded and lyrical, and the author uses words sparingly and with precision. In each poem the author conveys deep emotion and connection to their subject. This is a beautiful, thoughtful collection of poetry.

This is my second Tom Pearson poetry collection that I've read this year and I'm not even surprised at how quickly he has become one of my favourite poets.
The Sandpiper's Spell, like his other collection, has an element of visuality to it. It's full of vivid colours and startling descriptions. Pearson brings history, mythology, and geography together seamlessly and the influence of Greek mythology on him is quite evident. He is an expert at defamiliarising the familiar and presenting it from a new perspective. I feel these poems will stay with me for a very long time for I am still in the process of absorbing them completely.
This collection of poems gives me very summer vibes. It's the kind of book I'd take on a holiday and make my way slowly through. It's impressive how the poet manages to pack so much into so little. Some poems, as short as 2 lines, manage to communicate so much and that is the best part about his poems for me. It reminds me of Shakespeare's line, "brevity is the soul of wit." Indeed, this poetry collection shows the reader how those words ring true even centuries after they were written.

I’m not a regular reader of poetry but I really enjoyed this! Tom Pearson writes some beautifully! While this was a quick read, every poem will resonate with you and draw you in. There were several stanzas I reread just because I liked the way the words flowed across the page.
The Sandpiper’s Spell is broken down into parts and each part is filled with various poems that will draw you in and leave you marveling at how beautiful poetry can be. I highly recommend this book.

A beautiful and curious read. At once a spell and a calling, a screaming and an invocation. This debut book of poems will leave all readers wrapped in wonder. Tom Pearson has put together quite the engaging journey for us to move through, and with such finesse, we have no choice but to follow it like a trance.
What's more, the layout of these poems is also visually appealing. It aids in the journey the reader is on, in an almost sensory way--the layout lends a feeling, a longing, a discovering. I enjoyed the theme of The Sandpiper's Spell throughout--a true ebb and flow.
I look forward to reading more from Pearson and am hopeful he'll continue along this beautiful and strange, poetic path that he is on.

The Sandpiper's Spell by Tom Pearson is a mosaic of reflective observations, mythology, and intense emotions that deftly move between time and space to evoke striking imagery - a testament to both ancient times and human pensiveness and mortality.
Tom Pearson divides the meditative voyage into six sections, concluding with an epilogue. These six journeys begin by bringing the reader to a shoreline and then stop by multiple stopovers of various settings and locations through time and space before tumbling back to where he begins the journey. The transition brims with poems ranging from 3 pages to only a string of 13 words. However, the deep and evocative quality of the words makes them parallel, regardless of their size and mood.
The numerous references to Greek mythology in the poems take enough space to get overlooked. From the Greek fire deity Hephaestus in "Hephaestus" to Okeanos, the lord of the cosmos in "Creation," the book heavily references mythology and the Hebrew Bible, demonstrating the breadth of the author's canvas. However, readers who are less interested or unwilling to study these recurring references might be turned off. These references coexist with autobiographical poems, in which Pearson knits together his childhood on the front with lyrics like "Far-sighted" and "Bedtime Story." These childhood-themed poems sway with a tint of nostalgia, alluding to the passage from infancy to maturity.
Poetry lovers, especially those with a fascination for Greek mythology, will enjoy The Sandpipers Spell with its imagination-inspiring words and themes. Whether the poem is long or a short thread of reflection, it elicits a deep response with its deep meaning and evocation. As such, they require time and deep thinking, and once taken, they envelop the reader in a state of aesthetic appreciation.

The Sandpiper’s Spell by Tom Pearson is a unique poetry collection that really intrigued me. It felt very avant-garde. It piqued my curiosity and brought me to a state of introspection within while simultaneously being transported to otherworldly scenes. Just the creative spark I was asking for from a poetry book. From the structural standpoint, the poetry was beautifully crafted. The breaks and pauses added unto the momentum and flow of each piece. The pacing of the poems was very enjoyable to me. I enjoyed taking my time with it and feeling into each stanza. Pearson really makes space for readers to ponder and go deeper within the context of the words chosen and the poem as a whole. I also liked how this beckoned me to sit with the messages and digest the poems slowly, allowing my mind to make various connections within each poetic piece. The words themselves feel selectively chosen to express pertinent meaning. This impressed me, especially because there were many new words I was not familiar with and was very curious to find out the definitions as to receive the closest meaning to what the author intended. At the same time, I really enjoyed seeing how the poetry moved me without researching further meaning. I oftentimes found that the poems led me to reflect on many things lingering in my subconscious. It is so interesting to read something that can take me on my own personal journey. One book with multiple meanings to each reader, the poems served their purpose for me. It brought forth vivid imagination, introspection, and delight. Pearson has a beautiful way of combining words and visuals to create meaning of its own that also add unto the poetic introspection gained by the reader.

I haven't often read poetry that draws me in and is so relatable and yet draws so deeply on imagery and is often reflective of Greek mythology. This is an excellent debut from Tom Pearson. The collection is split into seven part and each poem within these is beautifully laid out on the page. There is no punctuation but the layout cleverly conveys the rhythm and pause points and I actually enjoyed not being restricted!
I found some of the poems, such as Death of a ... deeply moving, often in their simplicity. With a great love of the sea myself, (I actually read this book while on holiday sitting by the sea!) and the stirring of memories through fleeting references to the eighties and my own childhood times gone by, I was immersed in this debut collection of poetry from the start and appreciated the powerful imagery and the emotional stirrings it led to. The epilogue is beautiful and reading it at a beach was just perfect!

Okay so before moving forward, this book is a collection of poems. And a lot of them are just masterpieces. When I read a poem my expectations are straightforward, just a good theme, and the poem creates a picture. And almost every poem in this collection does that job. So here is what I think about it.
The poems are very vivid. The language is very expressive. I could form a mental picture of what I am reading and that is a big thing for poetry. To be honest, I do not know much about the technicalities of poetry writing rather I am just a reader who loves and appreciates good writing. And I loved this book. Apart from that I cannot say much more for me it was an experience and maybe it will be for you too. The poet wrote with love and care, which will reach the reader so go ahead and try it.
Thank you

Enthralling poems
I've loved Tom Pearson's works ever since I read "Still, the Sky." However, I'd be lying to say that I liked this one as much as the previous collection.
I loved the poem "Sandpipers Spell" which was just one of many in this lovely collection. Sandpipers Spell reminded me of days at the beach where you'd find mermaids purses scattered about! It was always so magical, and the fact that they hatched into killers made it haunting and beautiful . I felt the post captured this really well in this one!
I didn't fully understand some of the poems, however. They didn't seem to flow quite as well as the previous poetry collection. But, there are multiple gems throughout this collection! When read individually, they speak volumes! Definitely check this on out if you also loved Still, the Sky!

After reading another book in Tom's collection of poems, I decided to read The Sandpiper's Spell. Even though I have a few favorite poems in this one, it didn't move me like Still, the Sky did. I couldn't lose myself in this one like the first one I read. Mainly because there were different themes with The Sandpiper's Spell. Not to mention, there were too many short poems that I couldn't get into. I prefer reading longer poems. I also would have preferred it being art pieces that go along with some of the poems. Overall, it is a nice collection of poems and I recommend it to anyone who like haikus and poems that have different themes. This book definitely gets a four star rating from me.

The Sandpiper’s Spell is a collection of poems that juxtapose each other. The fighting imagery is vivid: seaside verses city, childhood verses adulthood, loneliness verses being loved. Divided into six parts with the ongoing “Sandpiper’s Spell” tying the poems together, it reads like a diary. The strongest poems are the ones about childhood, filled with sentimentality and nostalgia. The formatting of the poems also lends itself to the experience; it controls how the reader takes in the words and conveys its own imagery. Overall, Pearson has a thoughtful collection to brings to mind my own memories of growing up.

I really enjoyed the Sandpiper's Spell, which is a fantastic and varied collection of poetry. Tom Pearson writes beautifully and evocatively. The imagery which he deploys is genuinely moving in places. His style is also very accessible to readers who are perhaps not overly familiar with poetry as a genre. Pearson's poetry also has a wonderful sense of rhythm and momentum, and the entire collection seems to flow from one poem to another, even though the author writes about all manner of things. It even took me back to memories from my own life and childhood. I really recommend this collection.

This book is unique. The scenes are of a dream-like state, encapsulating the familiar and bizarre. Each poem is different, with only a distant connectivity to the others. A faint sense of unease haunts the poems, making the connection eerie but not evil.
This book was not for me personally. The contents were a little too abstract for my taste, but overall it was still a well written book. This book is not a must-read in my opinion, but it’s also not a must-not-read. If abstract poetry is more for you, then I would recommend this book.

Just the right dose (and type) of poetry for me
I don’t often read poetry but I had a hankering for some recently and I picked up this book and I’m glad I did. Each of the poems, even the super short ones in Part V, take you somplace. The words are short but the imagery is fantastic. My favorite was probably the Story Lodge. It was longer than most but the imagery just really struck a chord with a childhood memory. Great book to pick up and read at your leisure.

This is actually the second book I have read by Tom Pearson and I can not get enough!
His work is so vivid and enchanting, you can really visualize what he's writing about. I'm also deeply in love with the author's writing style and spacings, it allows time to grasp and feel what I'm reading.
I can't rave enough about this book! All I can say is that I'm ready to see more from Tom Pearson!

beautiful words
This book is full of beautiful words and poems. I am a bit of a beginner when it comes to poetry, so it was a little advanced for my knowledge and skill set. I think this book would be great for someone well-versed in poetry. Even as a beginner I couldn’t help but notice the beautiful Flowing Way the words fit together. And appreciated the artists experience.

Beautiful
Lush and spellbinding, the words woven here are like tendrils wrapping themselves around the reader to connect to their soul. I was drawn in to the sparseness of the poems and the brilliance of the images that came forth. Extremely beautiful.

Poetry, like all things, is heavily subjective, and in this case I did not care for any of the poems in this volume.
